My car won't pass smog and i was suspecting a fault egr vave but how would i know if mines working properly. my car passed all the other emmission test except ppm(no)?
I had an EGR valve not working properly, and I must disagree with the idea that it is a '99 so just replace it...I mean if that was the reasoning get a new car. The whole thing is a 99. I have the same exact car, and, I removed it and used choke/carb cleaner and screw drivers plus a little O-ring pick set of like hooked and sharper tools to scrape it clean and spray it, and scrape it and so forth. She is back to driving like a champ. I have a 1999 Saturn SL2 Manual. I am making a youtube video of the fix, I'll post its link when its up.
You can find these are much cheaper on ebay compared to a dealer or parts store. While the movement of the plunger may well be stuck, on mine the gasket was burned through between the passages. On a car this old, replace the whole thing and clean off the old gasket residue before reinstalling your new EGR.
Take it off and look at it internally, See if you can move the diaphragm if not then it needs replacement. But you should just go ahead and replace it anyways since it is a 99 it would just be worth it
