Air Bag DTC B1881 Code 47

I have a 2001 Mercury Sable that was recently in a wreck. Now the repairs have been done and it is flashing the air bag code 4 7. I had it scanned, which came up with a DTC of B1881 - Seatbelt Passenger Pretensioner Open Circuit.

I have removed the electrical plugs from under both seats, cleaned them and replaced them. I have also had the code cleared, but it returned immediately.

Any ideas of what I can do to fix this issue?

    Initially, following the wreck, the vehicle had several airbag codes. However, since the repairs, all of them but this one have cleared.

    Could the problem be anything other than the buckle needing replaced? I don't mind spending the bucks to replace it, so long as I know that its the problem.

    I have tested the circuit and it is reading at over 25ohm (open circuit).

    What exactly is the right seat pretensioner? Is this the assembly that pulls out of the moulding or the assembly where the buckle itself is?

    I have checked, cleaned and inspected all wires under both seats. The appear healthy and secure.

    The circuit is showing open. I don't want to go on a random replacing part mission until I get lucky and replace the right unit.

    Define tensioner. Are you talking about the assembly that the belt retracts to or the assembly of the buckle itself.

There is probably a broken wire somewhere in the belt or the control panel. You would have to actually trace all the wiring or test all wiring with ohmeter. You should just pull the dash and take out the bulb, or elese take out all fuses for the system

Dear 3mac, Wed 2-11-2009 3:09pm EST (USA)

Seat belt and Air Bag Systems repair is an intricate and complicated process. Trying to do it yourself could cause other seat belt/air bag system problems!

If you insist on doing it yourself, I would recommend researching the procedure carefully before trying anything yourself. I do not recommend doing it yourself!

Living with the error code is unacceptable since it's probably fired the seat belt tension-er charge due to your accident even though the air bag did not deploy. This means your SEAT BELT WILL NOT TIGHTEN IN ANOTHER ACCIDENT!

Please get this fixed by a reputable repair service ASAP!

    If you believe the codes were not reset to factory standards then I would go to a auto part store to have them check it, diagnose it, and reset it if recommended!

    I use Advance Auto Parts since they will usually do this for free!

The repairman forgot to reset the airbag sensor unit to factory specs.

    Its the airbag sensors. when the airbag was repacked by the repairman, they forgot to reset the sensor module.

    A holding circuit through the seat switch maintains the relay switch open. Thus, the seat belt must be buckled after sitting down in order to provide the pulse of current to initially close the relay switch and to provide the continuing current to keep the relay closed

One of the sensors that signals the airbag to deploy has to be either replaced or reset. It has narrowed it down for you and has told you that your issue is on the passenger side of the vehicle. I believe that it is connected to your seat belt assembly as many safety systems are set up to work in balance with the seat belts. Passenger Pretensioner Open Circuit tells me that the sensor is still triggered. This is a serious issue because of the fact that if the sensor is triggered to a certain degree then it is very possible that hard braking, going over speed-bumps or even hitting a pothole could completely engage the system and fire off one of the airbags. I have a phone call made to a friend of mine that is a great Ford repair mechanic and I will include his comments in this message in the next few minutes. Thanks

    I spoke to the mechanic I know and he said that there is sensor in the Retractor Assembly in the seat belt assembly that has been triggered open and needs to be replaced. He also said that before tearing it down to get to it that he suggests you find a schematic online to locate exactly where the pretensioner assembly circuit is. It can be in two places according to him. In the retractor assembly or in the base of the shoulder harness assembly. He said that there will be evidence of the assembly where a wiring harness is found leading into the retractor or the base assembly. That is where it is found and should be replaced. As soon as the open circuit is closed with the replacement part the reset will take and it is permanently repaired.

Get it checked at the local diagnosis center for very negligible fee/cost.and get it replaced.as its necessary to replace the unit to make it work.but just get it confirmed before replacing it.

Welcome to Fixya! This is a Common Error Code that Shows whenever there is an Accident. You will need to Replace the ENTIRE Tensioner Assembly on that Side. Anytime the Tensioner Has to do it's Job, on the Newer Vehicles, after an Accident it will need to be Replaced to Get the Airbags working again. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Replace the sensor. That is what I had to do on my Ford. Even though I was not in a accident nothing I tried worked until I replaced the pretensioner circuit

Check the yellow wire under the front seats one of them must be lose.also check out other connecting wires as any of those wires must be definately loose as this error code coming up.

The restraints control module (RCM) monitors the resistance of the circuit to the passenger safety belt pretensioner. If the RCM detects a resistance that is out of the range on the passenger safety belt pretensioner circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code(DTC) B1881 or B1886 in memory and flash, depending on the fault indicator, and lamp fault code (LFC) 47 depending on the fault (or higher priority code if one exists) on the air bag indicator.

Fault Conditions

The RCM monitors for the following fault conditions:

low resistance.
high resistance.
circuit open.
Possible Causes

A safety belt pretensioner fault can be caused by:

damaged wiring, terminals or connectors.
a faulted pretensioner.
a faulted RCM.

In plain English, the passenger seat belt buckle/pretensioner assembly is more than likely inoperative and needs to be replaced, unless the circuit to it is open. Hope this helps.

This code basically tells you that the passenger side seat belt pretensioner deployed. It is made into the seat belt buckle and what it does is when it deployes it pulls the seat belt tighter.When you had your accident there must have been a passenger in the seat with their belt buckled am I correct?
To verify this unhook the connector to the buckle and measure the reistance it is probably showing open ckt. the go to drivers side and unhook the connector there and measure resistance and you will probably se around 2.5 to 3 ohms. You will have to replace the buckle to correct it.

    Yeah it is part of the seat belt buckle itself you will see what I can best describe as an accordian sleeve from it to the buckle the at the bottom of the assembly you will see what looks like a gas cylinder potruding from the side.

    Remove the safety belt buckle and pretensioner .

    One more thing look at my pic you have to pull the seat cover back and take off the nut then it comes out.If you have to remove the seat to do this then you will need to get the OCS(occupant classification sensor) in the passenger seat recalibrated.The dealer can do this thru the IDS.

    Disreguard my last post your vehicle is not equipped with an OCS sensor in the passenger seat.So you don't have to have it calibrated.

Turn the ignition key to run position. The AIRBAG light will come on for a few seconds and then start the flashing sequence. Count the number of flashes. The light will flash a 2 digit number (eg. 12, or 23, or...). So a code 23, for example, will flash twice pause for a couple of seconds and then flash three times... pause for a couple seconds and repeat that sequence all over again.

    you can also try to Turn off the ignition, open the connector, clean the pins and reassemble. Applying dielectric grease to the pins should make the repair last longer.

When the airbags are deployed in an accident it burns out the airbag module, also known as the airbag diagnostic monitor, this must be replaced, the code u have indicates this is the problem. I am a Ford dealer tech and have seen this before.

    when the monitor burns out it melts a small wire fusible link inside the monitor on the circuit board, so yes the code is for an open circuit.

    Here is your answer, did u replace the R front explosive seat belt tensioner?

    Code 47 is for the r/f seat belt buckle--the seat belt buckle has a explosive in it that pulls the buckle down to tighten up the seat belt when you get into an accident--take a look under the r/f seat and take a look at the wire to the r/f seat belt buckle ,,just in case they are broken or unpluged -the wires are YELLOW / BLACK and YELLOW / RED ---there is also a TSB out for this that the conector under the seat has high resistance and they wont you to clean the conector ,

What code ? Plugging in a scan tool to check codes is how it's done , not by the light blinking an then staying on . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop.

AIR BAG Indicator
The AIR BAG indicator, located in the IPC is used to notify the driver of SIR system malfunctions and to verify that the SDM is communicating with the IPC. When the ignition is turned ON, the SDM and the IPC are supplied with ignition 1 voltage. The IPC responds by flashing the AIR BAG indicator seven times. While the IPC is flashing the AIR BAG indicator, the SDM conducts tests on all SIR system components and circuits. If no malfunctions are detected, the SDM will command the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator OFF via Class 2 serial data. The SDM provides continuous monitoring of the inflator module circuits by conducting a sequence of checks. If a malfunction is detected, the SDM will store a DTC and command the IPC to turn the AIR BAG indicator ON via Class 2 serial data. The presence of a SIR system malfunction could result in non-deployment of the inflator modules in the event of a collision, or deployment of the inflator modules without the event of a collision. The AIR BAG indicator will remain ON until the malfunction has been repaired.

Circuit 617 (PK/O) is connected to Circuit 624 (Y/W) inside RH primary crash sensor. Therefore, the voltage at Circuit 624 (Y/W) and air bag diagnostic monitor Pin C277-24 should be the same as the voltage at air bag diagnostic monitor Pin C276-16, Circuit 617 (PK/O).
The air bag diagnostic monitor periodically pulls the voltage at Pin C276-16, Circuit 617 (PK/O) low to verify the connection to Pin C277-24, Circuit 624 (Y/W). If the voltage at Pin C277-24, Circuit 624 (Y/W) does not pull low as a result of this test, the air bag diagnostic monitor will store in memory DTC B1941 and flash lamp fault code 41 on the AIR BAG indicator. If the connection between Pins C276-16, Circuit 617 (PK/O) and C277-24, Circuit 624 (Y/W) is later serviced, DTC B1941 will be stored in memory.
Possible Causes
Failure to get low voltage at Pin C277-24, Circuit 624 (Y/W) during the test can be caused by:
  • an open circuit in the wiring harness in either Circuit 617 (PK/O) or Circuit 624 (Y/W).
  • an open circuit inside RH primary crash sensor across Circuit 617 (PK/O) or Circuit 624 (Y/W).
  • a short to battery or ignition voltage in any of the Circuits 617 (PK/O), 619 (PK/W), 624 (Y/W), 625 (Y/LG).

Normal Operation
The restraints control module (RCM) checks all of the front air bag circuits for faults. If the RCM detects one of the following faults on any of the front air bag circuits, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2293 in memory and, depending on the fault, flash either lamp fault code (LFC) 19 or 21 (or higher priority code if one exists) on the air bag indicator.
Fault Conditions
The RCM monitors for the following fault conditions:

You don't. .take it to a reputable garage and let them repair it.if you just install a new air bag without replacing crash sensors, clockspring, air bag module and safing sensor, you may deploy the new air bag,possiably causing major bodily harm. ..stay away from it!!! When the air bag system has a problem it uses the air bag light tell you what the codes are. Three flashes then 1 or 2 second pause then 2 flashes would be a code 32. Then Google it and find out what the code is for. Hope this helps

I think you have a false code stored due to your work. clear the code and you should be ok.
If the air bag indicator does not illuminate or the indicator stays on or flashes at any time, a fault has been detected by the air bag diagnostic monitor.
Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) may not be displayed for approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch is placed in the RUN position. This is the amount of time the air bag diagnostic monitor requires to perform all tests and verify system faults.
Each DTC (a series of flashes and pauses of the air bag indicator):
  • Represents a two-digit number.
  • Is always displayed at least twice.
If the diagnostic monitor detects a fault in the air bag system, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be written to the diagnostic monitor's Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM). This DTC will then cause the lamp to flash a lamp fault code (LFC) on the air bag warning lamp and can be retrieved with the New Generation STAR (NGS) tester. After servicing the DTC may then be cleared from the NVRAM.
If a system fault is present and the air bag indicator is malfunctioning, an audible tone will be heard. The tone is a series of five sets of five beeps. If the tone is heard, the air bag system needs attention.
If a fault exists that makes unwanted air bag deployment possible, the air bag diagnostic monitor will attempt to remove deployment power by turning on a solid state switch to blow the 10A battery fuse.

If the 10A battery fuse has successfully been blown by the air bag diagnostic monitor, the air bag diagnostic monitor will not attempt to blow it again until the proper fault has been repaired and cleared (refer to Diagnostic Instructions). The air bag diagnostic monitor will store both the unwanted deployment diagnostic trouble code and the loss of deployment power diagnostic trouble code. The loss of deployment power diagnostic trouble code is the highest priority.
If a fault exists that makes unwanted air bag deployment possible, the air bag diagnostic monitor has an internal fuse that that will blow (open) automatically. This removes all power to the air bag deployment circuit.
DTCs are prioritized numerically. If two or more faults occur at the same time, the fault having the highest priority will be displayed first. After that fault has been corrected, the next highest priority fault will be displayed.
The air bag diagnostic monitor includes an internal backup power supply. This feature provides sufficient backup power to deploy the air bag in the event the battery (10655) or battery cables are damaged in a collision before safing and air bag sensors close. The backup power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately one minute after the positive battery cable is disconnected.

Once a DTC is logged into the air bag diagnostic monitor memory, it will stay in memory until 80 key cycles have been recorded or until the NGS is used to erase the DTCs. Once 256 key cycles have been recorded since the concern was last detected, the DTC will automatically be removed from memory.

Active Command Modes
This command allows the technician to verify operation of the air bag system, indicator and tone. When the air bag output command is executed, the indicator and the tone are simultaneously activated for approximately four seconds. Both devices are automatically deactivated.

Try clearing the codes & see if it returns. I do not see a code fault 10. Starts at 12.

Normal Operation
The air bag diagnostic monitor (14B056) continually checks the air bag system for readiness. When a fault condition is detected, the DTC associated with that fault is stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor's Non-Volatile Random Access Memory (NVRAM). After writing the DTC to NVRAM, the air bag diagnostic monitor signals the fault by flashing the appropriate diagnostic trouble code on the air bag indicator. The diagnostic trouble code written to NVRAM is permanently stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor until cleared by the diagnostic trouble code clearing procedure.
  • Upon each cycle of the ignition switch (11572) , the air bag diagnostic monitor checks for diagnostic trouble codes written in NVRAM. If any diagnostic trouble codes exist in NVRAM, the air bag diagnostic monitor will then check to see if these fault conditions are still present.
  • If the conditions of the diagnostic trouble code in NVRAM are still present, then the air bag diagnostic monitor will use the air bag indicator to flash out the diagnostic trouble code number that was written in memory.
  • If the conditions of the diagnostic trouble code are not still present (indicating an intermittent or serviced fault), the air bag diagnostic monitor will use the air bag indicator to flash out a DTC which is the sum of the diagnostic trouble code in NVRAM plus 40.
Example: Due to corrosion, high resistance develops on the driver side air bag circuit. The air bag diagnostic monitor stores a diagnostic trouble code 32 in NVRAM. Upon each cycle of the ignition switch , the air bag diagnostic monitor checks the resistance of the driver air bag circuit.
  • If the resistance is still high, the air bag diagnostic monitor causes the air bag indicator to flash out a DTC 32.
  • If the resistance falls within the normal range due to service or an intermittent condition, the air bag diagnostic monitor causes DTC 72 to be flashed on the air bag indicator.
Once a fault has been serviced, the associated diagnostic trouble code may be cleared from NVRAM. Only diagnostic trouble codes that the air bag diagnostic monitor sees as repaired or intermittent may be cleared (diagnostic trouble codes 52 and above). In no circumstances can hard fault conditions (diagnostic trouble codes 45 and below) be cleared.
  1. Follow the diagnostic procedures as outlined to service the fault condition flashing on the air bag indicator.
  1. Cycle the ignition switch to OFF and then to RUN.
  1. Observe air bag indicator prove-out (six ± two seconds) followed by diagnostic trouble code (52-85) flashing completely one time.
  1. Locate the Diagnostic "Trouble Code Clear" Connector located underneath the glove compartment (06010) containing Circuits 631 (T/R) and 57 (BK).
  1. Use a jumper wire to short Circuit 631 (T/R) to Circuit 57 (BK) or to another good ground. This short must be made after the diagnostic trouble code flashes completely one time, but before the warning light stays on continuously.
  1. Hold short until air bag diagnostic monitor tone sounds (approximately five seconds).
  1. Release short on Circuit 631 (TAN/RED STRIPE) to Circuit 57 (BLACK). This short must be released within 25 seconds after the diagnostic monitor tone sounds. Diagnostic trouble code is now cleared from NVRAM. Next highest priority diagnostic trouble code stored in NVRAM (if one exists) will begin flashing.
