1994 Toyota Tercel Starter Problems

1994 Toyota Tercel 1.5L EFI – Direct Drive starter - The car started everyday with no problems. One afternoon, I had to get a jump to go to work - battery seemed dead and starter made no noise when I turned the key. When I tried to start it to go home -nothing. Couldn't start it even with a jump. The starter does not even click. Removed starter and battery and took it to 3 different auto parts stores to test - battery failed with weak cell but starter passed every time. I even had them test it multiple times at each parts place and it always passed. Bought new battery, replaced battery terminal ends, reinstalled starter and turned key - still no sound from the starter. Checked continuity of ground and test light showed ground worked at both ends. Also put test light to starter and it showed that power was getting there. Pulled every fuse and only found two (EFI and some other minor 15 amp) that I had to replace. Still nothing. I hear the main relay fuse in hood fuse box click and EFI pump click when I turn key but nothing else happens. Lights don't dim when left on and I turn the key. But inside climate control fan and radio no longer work when I turn the key to accessory even though fuses are good. Everything else works, lights (dome, headlamps, tail lamps, flashers), horn, etc. I'm baffled at this point.

I'm inline with you that it is something to do with teh ignition. I do not have an alarm system. Can you provide me with the steps of any tests that I can perform myself or a reference link.I would appreciate it

I have a the similair problem. The 15 amp fuse( I think its the ECM fuse that controlls the starter blows. when this happens I replace the

fuse and the car will start again until the next time. Can't find a problem

because everytime I replace the fuse everything works fine after that.

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function""

i do have an alarm system and i've tried to disable it many time now, but still cant find a way. I now the module is under the radio but if i pull it out, the car wont start. Do you know how to disable it????? Please, help!!!!!!!!!

95 camry 20 jump started wrong way around. changed main fuse.starter turns for second then cuts out

Truck ran fine prior to battery failing. Installed new battery and it won't turn over. Connections are good. fuses fine. Dash light & head lights come on normally when key is on, but does nothing when key turned to start. no clicking. no sounds. it is original key. Could it be the anti-theft device? If so, how do you clear this code or reset it if you don't have the proper computer diag. equipment?

I am having a similar problem. My 1999 Toyota Corolla would not start after the Battery was replaced. I took to a mechanic and he did something which allowed the car to start. Then, it still had problems starting so I replaced the starter motor. When I went to start it, the starter kept turning until I disconnected the battery. Does this problem ring a bell? Thanks for your help.

1994 Camry won't start, other times starts right off, battery or starter problem

I'd really need to know if it cranks OK. If it cranks but won't fire, I'd suspect the EFI main relay of sticking. Take that out and tap it, then replace.

If it won't crank, and then does, I think the main contacts at the bottom of the starter solenoid are worn out. Intermittent operation is typical of that.

1996 Toyota tercel doesn't start doesn't crank

Well you may have more than one problem.
As far as cranking, a mechanic would check for voltage at the starter and trace back to the key switch. The key switch could cause both problems. There is also a neutral safety switch that could cause it not to crank.
You could also have a bad ground connection between the engine and body.

1997 toyota tercel has brand new starter in it but when I turn key to start it the starter keeps trying to star even with the engine running, when I turn car off and take key out it still continues to

Hello Theresa Honeycutt,

There is an easily explainable configuration that would cause your dilemma on OLD FASHION 4 connection (two big posts & two small gauge wire posts) starter SOLENOIDS...

1997 Tercel is 3 wire (can't happen)

Technically what you are describing is not possible as a USER MISTAKE because the TOYOTA solenoid only has THREE Battery TERMINALS showing.

It is a MANUFACTURING DEFECT.

YOU will need to return the starter as DEFECTIVE and get another one..

Fault: The primary winding of the ("s" lead on classic drawings ... "st1" lead on the 1997 Tercel) has a DIRECT SHORT to the output battery (starter motor side) of the main battery source (internal solenoid defect).

There should be ABSOLUTELY no continuity between the large posts (battery & motor) and the ST1 terminal WITHOUT THE STARTER switch ("st1") momentary contact being energized.

Then inspect the Ring gear on the vehicle to assure no
GEAR TEETH have been broken off in the previous melee... (Serious job... hope not).

Use the BBB Industries FREE wiring diagrams to trace your "starter wire" (registration required: proprietary documents).

I have a 1995 toyota tercel dx. How do i change the starting motor?

quite easy to do ,disconnect battery first then the cables on the starter and then 3 bolts thats all their is to it ,starter at back of engine so be prepared to put it on axle stands and lay underneath ,use a 3/8th drive socket set with plenty of extensions and a universal .not a difficult job for a part time mechanic

What kind of starter does a 1993 Toyota Tercel 1.5 engine take

That is a problem with some vehicle parts, and about the only way to know for sure is to look for a part # or name on the starter itself, otherwise you have to hope they stock the one you need. Yes I see one is direct drive, and the other is gear reduction. May I suggest, if you can't take it off & get in for another, try to get a clear digital camera picture of it, print it off & take it to parts store for them to compare to the picture they have.
