I have a 1999 Golf 1.6 and it works perfectly except for every now and then the rev counter will start jumping (between 0 and 2) and it then seems to cause the engine to cut out. It usually happens within the first 5 minutes of me driving the car; sometimes I will just be waiting at a junction and then when I go to pull off the car has cut out and the battery light has come on without me even realising.
When driving at speed the rev counter works fine, it is only whilst doing very low speeds or idling that it seems to happen. I suspect it is because the rev counter goes too low that the engine therefore cuts out although I have no idea what would be causing this. As I say, the problem is intermittent and sometimes it will start up and drive fine. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Thanks for your responses guys.
I don't think it's to do with the sensor because if it was just sensing it wrong it wouldn't actually cause the engine to cut out would it? (I'm only guessing here - I haven't a clue!?)
Is there any way of checking whether or not it is the spark plug wire emissionwiz? And if that is the problem, would it be expensive to have fixed?
at night spray a mist of water on the plug wires and see if you see a spark or the engine misses, I am pretty sure about this diagnosis, have seen it many times in the shop.
sounds like u may have a leaking spark plug wire.
My seat ibiza 2007 has just cut out and rev counter is sometimes high
