97 F-250 Transfer case shifter linkage broken!

SHIFT LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT
(1) Shift transfer case into 4L position. (make sure your shifter is fully in the 4L position)
(2) Raise vehicle.
(3) Loosen lock bolt on adjusting trunnion (Fig.
87).
(4) Be sure linkage rod slides freely in trunnion.
Clean rod and apply spray lube if necessary.
(5) Verify that transfer case range lever is fully
engaged in 4L position. (you can do this under the vehicle at the transfer case)
(6) Tighten adjusting trunnion lock bolt.
(7) Lower vehicle

Basically, you are just ensuring that the position you put the lever inside the vehicle is the same position that the transfer case lever is in and then tightening the locking bolt.

it sounds like a linkage problem ? first check fluid level in transfer case , then remove linkage and try to engage transfer case manually , if it does then there is a shifter problem if you can't and fluid level is OK then there is a internal problem and transfer case has to be removed for internal inspection, good luck.

Just to confirm, you don't have an electrical 4WD selector; you have to move a shifter on the floor of our cab? If that's the case, I'd suspect that you have a linkage misalignment or malfunction that doesn't allow the 4WD selector to completely return to the 2WD position. Putting the truck into reverse and back to drive probably causes a jolt to the 4WD linkage which disengages the transfer case from the driveline. Check for slack or binding in the transfer case shift level linkage (clean and lube the linkage won't hurt).

new linkage and new shifter and that is only if the transfer case is good

Mine did the same thing so I removed the center console and then the boot around transfer case shifter and the shifter it self.
This is when I discovered a broken linkage that had wedged itself between the 4L & 4H shafts in the transfer case. I removed the broken parts and reassembled and it will shift between 2H & 4H but not 4L until the broken plastic linkage is replaced. Found your post while lookin for the replacement part so I thought I would try to help. Good Luck

It sounds like the linkage needs to be totally readjusted.

chk the linkage under the truck for any foriegn objects. block the tires and have a friend put light pressure on the shifter while you lightly tap the linkage.

some older trucks dont have a cable but have a linkage to the transfer case

WELL HAVE YOU CHECK THE SHIFTER CABLE MAKE SURE ITS MOVING THE LINKAGE ON TRANMISSION IF IT IS MOVING LINKAGE IN TRANMISSION AND YOU CAN PUSH THE TRUCK AROUND IN GEAR SOMTHIG BROKE IN TRANSMISSION TO MAKE SUR TRANSFER CASE ANT ISUSSE TRY PUTING IT FOUR WHEEL DRIVE IF YOU STILL CAN MOVE THE TRUCK AROUND THEN I SAY ITS TRANMISSION HOPE THIS HELPS

are you sure its in park and not reverse. the linkage on these blazers get really loose on alot of them. an indication of worn linkage is you have to play with the shifter to start the truck now and then.

check that first. do you know how to manualy put the truck in park without the shifter? if you do i would do that to make sure and rule out inaccurate shift indicator.
