Knocking/tapping sound behind left side of engine

No sound in park but tapping noise starts when put into d and r. Continues when in drive but sounds more often at lower gears when turning. The check engine light has recently come on for good. I checked under the hood a few weeks ago and there was some vibration around the air filter that stopped when I lifted it slightly. Is the engine mount possibly worn?

If the knocking is occurring while vehicle is in motion it can be a driveshaft cv joint bad..if it occurs while not moving but in gear, it could be the exhaust rattleing under the car..may also be the front end suspension bushings worn..

Your answer is super helpful and I'll check those out :) The sound is really coming from under the hood so I don't know about the exhaust...

SOURCE: check engine light blinking and a sound like air coming from the engine area

I've had the same problem with my 1999 Mazda Protege, 1.6L, Automatic.

The problem was a damaged spark plug, resulting in a loss of compression in one of the cylinders.

Solution: replace all spark plugs and make sure wires are in good condition. I recommend NGK Platinum.

SOURCE: 2003 Protege5 front suspension knocking noise

Yes there is a bearing on the front stuts on the top under the upper strut mount and it is plastic. But the last guy was right it is most likely your struts, or it is your stabilizer links. There doesn't have to be much play in the links to make a tonne of noise. I replaced all my struts myself and it solved the problem for me. You can buy fully assembled strut kits for most veh so you don't have to compress the spring...just dont loosen fully the top middle large bold on top of the strut lol.

Engine got a knocking cold start, silint when hot

It has developed a clicking engine noise on a cold start. After the car has warmed up, the sound goes away. ... Clicking or a sharp tapping from the valve cover on top of the engine would point to a valve train noise. A dull tapping or slapping sound from the side of the engine block would point more toward piston slap.4 Nov 2011

Have a 98 Olds Bravada it has a noise coming from rear of engine on the passenger side. Dealership said it was possible a transmission issue. I think differently, b/c the noise is at park or drive.

Depends on the noise. Tapping or knocking is rod bearings, engine side. Whining is the transmission side. Torque converter, pump, and parts further inside the transmission.

Sounds like car has been overheated and has a collapsed piston skirt. This will cause piston slap until piston heat up and expand.-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Sarah, happy you found the problem. I have never heard of a foot spring and have no idea where it fits or what it does? The reason I'm answering is to ask you when requesting help from us, it would help plenty if you told us what car, what model, year of manufacture and the type of engine. In fact as much info as possible. happy that you found the problem though. Regards John

Ticking/Tapping when car starts but goes away???

I had what sounds like the exact same problem. It was an exhaust leak from the left (driver's) side exhaust manifold. This engine has a history of the manifold bolts breaking and causing the exhaust leak. The engine is also used on some Dodge vehicles. It sounds like a tick and I almost mistook it for a bad lifter. I took it to the local Jeep dealer who confirmed the exhaust leak. I replaced the left manifold completely and replaced bolts/gaskets on both sides (left/right) and it fixed the problem. Be careful, as the dealer tried to gouge me on the price. You are looking in the ball park of $600 parts/labor. I got parts for $120 and it took the better part of a work day to do the job.

Engine knocking noise in 2000 saab 9-3 SE?

It's a common problem with these cars i am actually fixing mine as of now. That car is all about oil pressure and when it is low you'll start to get a tap and or what sounds like a knock due to the lifters not having enough pressure. Try taking your oil pan off and check your oil pick up line going from the oil pan to the turbo. A lot of times it gets a lot of sludge build up and makes the pressure little to none. If that looks clear check the slump inside the oil pan and see if that has sludge build up. Well hope this helped

Front driver side suspension knock over bumps

See if you can bounce car and replicate the noise. If you can, you should be able to find it, and put your hand on it. Stabilizer bushing are a place to look, both at the lower a arm and on the frame. If you narrow it down to the strut, it will need to be replaced. The front trans mount also goes bad, try putting it in drive with your foot on the brake and give it some gas and see if the engine moves an excessive amount.
