No sound in park but tapping noise starts when put into d and r. Continues when in drive but sounds more often at lower gears when turning. The check engine light has recently come on for good. I checked under the hood a few weeks ago and there was some vibration around the air filter that stopped when I lifted it slightly. Is the engine mount possibly worn?
If the knocking is occurring while vehicle is in motion it can be a driveshaft cv joint bad..if it occurs while not moving but in gear, it could be the exhaust rattleing under the car..may also be the front end suspension bushings worn..

I've had the same problem with my 1999 Mazda Protege, 1.6L, Automatic.
The problem was a damaged spark plug, resulting in a loss of compression in one of the cylinders.
Solution: replace all spark plugs and make sure wires are in good condition. I recommend NGK Platinum.

Yes there is a bearing on the front stuts on the top under the upper strut mount and it is plastic. But the last guy was right it is most likely your struts, or it is your stabilizer links. There doesn't have to be much play in the links to make a tonne of noise. I replaced all my struts myself and it solved the problem for me. You can buy fully assembled strut kits for most veh so you don't have to compress the spring...just dont loosen fully the top middle large bold on top of the strut lol.

Just took my car to the shop for the same appearent reason me also thinking it may be lifters. My mechanic said it spounds like a worn wrist pin ...... bad news for you if this is the case .......recomendations rebuild the engine or buy a new or remanufactured one. if the wrist pin lets go then you could throw a rod. If you must drive the car please be gentle

iam am no doubt totally wrong here ,but i would first of all check the power steering fluid level ,then turn steering from left to right with engine running and check the fluid level again
