Ok, Disconnect it from the Tranny First. This will make it easier to Fish Through. Connect the New Cable on the Tranny. Follow where the Old one Goes with the New one, Removing the Old one as you go. It will enter the Cab and work it's way up to the Sterring Column. You will Need to remove the Dash Panel to Access the Cable on the Shifter, It just Pulls Loose. You are at the Hardest Part of this at this Point. Let me know if you cannot access the Shifter From this Point. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

My 1996 chevy suburban will not shift back into park. have to start vehicle in nuetral. the truck drives like normal. please help!

  • daddyof03 Jan 19, 2011

I have the problem of my truck not going into park. After looking underneath, I realized the plastic casing around the shifting cable may be cracked where it connects to the metal bracket. I wonder if I still have to replace the whole cable, or can I just replace the casing. For mookonski, I could only start it in neutral also, until I found this problem. If I get under the truck and flip the gear forward into park (seems easy to flip, just like a switch with the cable loose) everything runs fine until I stop again, then have to go down under to switch it back to park again, so it is just sitting now till I can get it fixed.

Shifter cables are easy to replace you just need to make sure that you are doing it correctly so do one end at a time. It sounds to me like it got really tight and snapped

I have a 2004 Mercury Marquis and the car wont shift. The shifter cable is fine but the end that connects to the transmission is broke, is there a way to fix that end without replacing the whole shifter...

No, the cable is a specific length. I can not think of a fix that would last any time at all without loosing length. It really isn't that hard to replace the shifter cable.

I have an 04 Chevy cavalier. It was driving just fine but last night I went to leave and the gear shift wouldn't go in gear.. It. Just slides back and fourth.

Sounds like the cable broke. Where shifter is, The bezel around the shifter pops off. You can get it high enough to see if it broke the shifter cable mount or not. If it did, you'll have to replace the shifter.

1998 pontiac sunfire gt standard transmission diagram having shifter problems trying to find out why

Check that as you move the shifter, that the shifting rods beneath are moving in tune with the shifter's position.
If not, then your mechanism is faulty.
It is almost certain that the issue lies with the external shifting mechanism.
The issue may be just beneath the shifter lever, within the rubber or leather bag shroud. You might have to pull out the centre console to have a closer inspection.

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy the shifter cable came off and I had to put it in park myself. I noticed at the end of the shifter cable that the round plastic washer at the end of the cable broke. How can I find...

Check out this site for the part to fix the transmission end of the cable. Go to the rear end of the transmission on the driver' side (under the car/truck). Make sure to push the transmisssion lever toward the front of the car/truck (park position), the shifter should also be in park. Get the part, install is easy.
