The bottom half of the fuel tank gas increases the frequency of the dying, also sitting ideling in slow traffic. when attempting to re-start, ever time it will go thru the same process:1st attempt it will start but quickly die as though ist suffocating, 2nd turn over it will start then dye as though its flooded, 3rd time it will start then backfire under the hood as though its a carburator on fire, but its a throttle body, then it too will die. This sequence of re-starts occurs in this same order every time it dies. the only way to get it to start after dying is to turn the ignition key on then off, three consecutive times before turning it over, then it will start and keep running. The headlights turn on with the ignition on position, making it a huge drain on the battery turning the headlights on and off 3 times every time it dies.
SOURCE: Ignition Problems
Some Possibilities:
Fouled/used up spark plugs causing weak ignition. Dirty air filter. Defective distribution, ignition cables. Improperly operating choke/automatic choke mechanism. Improperly set idle speed and/or idle fuel mixture. Mis-adjusted timing. Fuel system issues like clogged up ports etc... ECU computer problem(causing timing, mixture problems). Overtightened belts.
Which of those above things did the mechanics actually check and rule out? This shouldn't be too difficult to troubleshoot. As long as the engine has strong sparks with proper timing, and compression is good, and the fuel/air mixture is correct, and that mixture actually gets into the engine without problems then the car should run fine. So, ask the mechanic if he/she verified all of those things.
SOURCE: Hard starting and dies at times while driving.
ignition coil pack it intermitten.
also check the crank sensor and the main crank pulley, this is where the engine gets its firing orders from
SOURCE: Fuel problem with 03 alero.......Sputtered, died, now wont stop
I am having the same exact issue right now with my 01 Alero. Been having electrical issues with lights coming on and off. ABS was kicking on a few times even. It started sputtering like it was running out of gas, thought that might have been the case. But after I put gas in it it still didn't start. Now it turns over but nothing. What ended up being wrong with yours?
