SOURCE: FUEL PUMP

Maybe you have a faulty fuel pump, but first is there gas in the tank? How do you know? Has your fuel guage failed? If you have added fuel recently, have you traveled far enough to burn all the fuel? You'd be surprised how often I find faulty fuel guages after spending too much time trying to diagnose a no-start suspected fuel delivery problem. If you have ANY doubt, please add 1 gallon of fuel to the tank. Now turn the key to the run position, DO NOT TRY TO START THE ENGINE! The pump should run for about 30 seconds to prime the fuel system. You should be able to hear it running in a quiet environment, but you can stick a funnel in the fuel fill inlet and listen while an assistant turns the key to the run position. (Have them shut the driver's door, the Ford Key in ingition alert chime is so loud it may prevent you from hearing the pump run) If you can hear the pump run, and you get no fuel, it's time to check the in line fuel filter that no one ever seems to get around to changing! BE CAREFUL THOUGH BECAUSE IF THE PUMP RAN, YOU JUST PRESSURIZED THE FUEL SYSTEM, AND HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SPRAY WILL GREET YOU WHEN YOU TRY TO SERVICE THE IN LINE FILTER. Also, if you've never replaced one of these Ford in line fuel filters, you will discover a retainer that will have to be dealt with for filter removal. If yours is an all-steel coupler, you will need a fuel line disconnect tool to disassemble this connection. DO NOT TRY TO DISCONNECT IT WITHOUT THAT TOOL, or you will get to enjoy the fun of replacing the entire line when you damage the coupler. If your coupler is plastic, it also has a removal plastic retainer. Make sure your new filter includes the retainer clips, they are horse-shoe shaped plastic clips. Once you see the replacements, you'll recognize what you should be looking for. Once you verify that you have two new clips, you can break the old ones to remove them, be careful NOT TO DAMAGE the couple on the line. If your pump didn't run, you'll probably need to replace it. If you don't know how to remove and replace a fuel tank, and if you don't possess the proper fuel module retainer wrench, and if you're not sure how many hoses, lines, sensors, or elecrtical connectors need to be removed, now might be a good time to seek professional assistance. BEWARE! Most mechanics won't accept a job you have started, but can not complete! They call those "basket cases" because most people bring in the removed components in some kind of basket. I always charge extra on "Basket Cases" but only if you're persuasive enough to convince me to accept the job! Long story short... Listen for the pump to run during the prime interval, if it doesn't, you can check the fuel pump relay, and the inertial switch. Usually these Ford inertial switches on Tauruses are in the trunk on the Driver's side close to the trunk lid hinge, they will pop-out kind of like a circuit breaker upon an impact with the vehicle. It's there to interrupt the fuel pump in the event of an accident. They can also be tripped by a severe chuck-hole encounter, a tow truck ride, or other various sorts of impacts. Remember, it's not a good idea to try to handle a full fuel tank without the proper equipment and training, it's not much fun with a half full tank either so be extremely careful! DO NOT EVER ATTEMPT TO WORK UNDERNEATH A VEHICLE WITHOUT SAFETY STANDS PROPERLY SUPPORTING THE VEHICLE IN A PROVEN STABLE CONDITION! Once raised and supported you must try to physically knock the vehicle off the stands to prove that it's in a stable condition BEFORE ANYONE EVER GETS UNDERNEATH IT!
This procedure involves life threatening dangers including fire hazards, explosion hazards, and danger associated with being crushed by the vehicle! ONLY PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL should attempt to perform these dangerous services. If you ignore these warnings, you do so at your own risk!

SOURCE: 2002 ford taurus won't start at first crank in the morning

remove the air filter housing from the throttle body, or if its mult-ported injection, remove the large air duct. Do this the night before. The next day, before cranking and having a spray can of carb. cleaner, spray a couple of shots of carb cleaner either into the large air duct, spray towards the engine, or if its single body injection, spray directly on to the throttle body.

Crank engine immediately, preferrably have some one else sitting in the car to start it after you spray.

If the car even tries to start, replace cold start relay.

SOURCE: 2003 ford escape no start

The solution for my problem was the crank position sensor. The only way we were able to find the problem is the escape finally would not crank and I was able to have the diagostic done at the time it would not crank and then the mechanic was able to tell the crank sensor was faulty. Hope this can help someone else, so far the escape has been running great and never had any other issue with it.

Loose connection is the problem. It takes petience to find where it is at. Do some wiggling on wires to see where it is.

SOURCE: Intermittent fuel pump engagement when turning key - 2001 Taurus

try cleaning the connector that goes to the fuel pump, sometimes they corrode on inside. If that does not fix, test the wires feeding fuel pump with a multi meter until the condition shows itself again, if voltage drops to zero or very low then wiring problem, if voltage is unchanged with problem and fuel pump is not working and connectors are all clean, try replacement of fuel pump.

My car ran fine yesterday. Today I tried to start it it cranks but won't fully start

What do you mean by fully start? If it is running poorly it could be the fuel pump, filter or the relay .

Hi I have a 99 c180 and was running fine yesterday , but I went out to start this morning and it just keeps winding over and wont start , , doesnt even cough , just winds over I cant find any eng fus

Sounds like fuel pump not working, have someone crank it for you, take off gas cap and listen . Can you hear pump while cranking? If not bang on bottom of fuel tank while cranking, if it starts you will need a fuel pump if not best check pressure and power to pump

Hi. my 2000 ford windstar was working fine and yesterday it just would not start. Its cranking hard but it just would not start. sounds like its not getting gas. What could be the problem? how can I find...

The fuel pump in the tank could have failed. Check for fuel pressure on the fuel rail with a fuel pressure guage at the shrader valve. You could have some one bang on the fuel tank with a rubber mallet while cranking it may or may not still start if it starts it needs a fuel pump. If not need to check fuel pressure. Could also be other reasons.

My car was running fine yesterday and this morning it didn't start. got a new battery, replaced the oil and checked the fuses. everything is fine but car still won't start. suggestions, please

Check for spark and fuel. When you turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump in the tank for a few seconds till the pressure builds up. When you crank the engine there should be spark at the plugs.

2002 ford tarus cranks but wont start. 32000 miles. I did not drive much during the last 6 months. I started it and it ran fine drove to a neighbors house when i tried to start it cranked but would not...

First, verify that there is gas in the vehicle. Next, listen for the pump to energize when you turn the ignition switch to the on position. If you dont hear anything, check the fuel pump relay. Swap it with another one next to it, they are often the same part. If it still doesn't energize, its most likely the pump thats failed. If you hear the pump energize, then the pump pressure needs to be checked. A fuel gauge needs to be connected under the hood on the fuel rail to read system pressure. Verify that its at factory specs. If not, replace the pump.

Will turn over but not start-need help quick

One easy thing is to tap on the bottom of the fuel tank while trying to start it.If it starts then you know it`s the fuel pump. The only other thing is to check the fuel pressure but you need a pressure tester. The other thing is to check and make sure you have power to the pump. This is the gray wire at the pump connector. Also make sure your ground is good. The specified pressure is 55-60 psi.Hope this helps.Good luck.
