I've got a 2000 Passat Wagon. It's a V6.
Occasionally a white smoke either comes through the AC vents or from under the hood. I've never been able to stop and see where it is coming from under the hood, but it only comes out of the sides or close to the windshield. There is never a lot of smoke and after driving for a few minutes the smoke and/or smell goes away. It smells like burning rubber or oil. Sometimes you can smell it but not see the smoke.
My wife thinks that it may only happen when we are running the AC. It certainly doesn't happen every time we drive.
In addition, I have a check engine light and a message that says "Emissions Workshop." I've checked online and it seems like the message could be anything or it could mean nothing. If I unhook the battery, the message goes away for about a week, then returns.

It could be something as simple as a new gas cap..Have the car scanned and see what the code is...

most autoparts stores will run the check engine light for you for free....I am assuming that you either have a clogged catalytic converter, or your o2 sensor is throwing a fault....have autozone check it out and post back.

Mine is a 2000 VW Jetta GL. Not every time I run my AC, but randomly when I run it I see white smoke come out of the vents. I stop the car and turn off the AC and it stops. Nothing else happens. The air stays cold. Everything else seems normal. Still can't figure out why. I've called many auto shops and all have said they need to see it happen in order to diagnose, but it does not happen on command, so still a mystery.
