I have a 2000 saturn sl1. 1.9. My transmission when shifting into reverse it shifts hard after about 2 seconds of putting it in reverse gear. Then going forward it more of a stall shifts from 1-2 and 2-3 and sometimes takes a while to shift when im going over 55 to final gear and also when i slow down it shifts down when im already at a stop. it also makes my car have a high idle when in gear i can get up to speed without ever hitting the gas pedal. This has just started within a couple days of driving. I had the transmission fluid and filter changed and helped going in forward a little but still does it.

run fault codes and check for faulty TCM (transmission control module)

could be a selector failure. easiest to check first or internall drama with torqu converter ,one way clutch or other. these will require r@r n overhaul

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

when was the clutch last change ?
my saturn is a 1998 with over 300k and never had this happen but I have changed my clutch at 275k

I take it that you have a standard transmission ? there is no adjustment, but on the saturns the plastic insert on the shifter lever (remove the center console) is what breaks, Napa auto parts has the replacement part for about $20, or you can go to saturn and spend $200 on replacing both cables

Did you check the transmission fluid level? If necessary, add fluid. However you probably have a more serious problem. Take the car to a qualified transmission mechanic.

that is because this is a either a linkage problem to shift column on transmission or just maybe the transmission has to be replaced. maybe all you need is a shift kit. try that ok?
