The fuel pump in the gas tank and the fuel pressure regulator are what controls fuel pressure-the pump builds pressure in the lines and the fuel rail on the engine, and when pressure is correct the pressure regulator keeps it constant by controlling the fuel return line from the fuel rail to the tank.
If your fuel filter is clean and not plugged, it sounds like the pump or the pressure regulator needs to be replaced. Even though the pump is working, it may be weak and failing. Some vehicles have the FPR inside the tank with the pump-You will have to check where yours is located. If it is located on the fuel rail, it can be checked to see if it is working right.
Good luck.

SOURCE: 1996 GMC K1500 Pickup Starting Problem

i would try a fuel filter first. the fuel gauge going crazy is most likely the sender they go bad and eventually stop working. the bummer is you have to replace the fuel module. these aftermarket are about 200 bucks. the module comes with the pump and sender which is the next part you want to look at. gm has some issues with the harness to the fuel pump externaly. it actualy will melt and start to lose conection. i would check this by visualy inspecting the plug on top of the tank. unplug it and take a look. if it is at all disscolored replace the pump (module). the new pump comes with a replacement harness (make sure its in the box)hope this helps and good luck

2002 GMC YUKON XL 1500 MOTOR DIES AFTER GOING

Check the fuel cap!! If the vacuum relief is not working it can impede the fuel flow and cause the engine to shut down or not restart after a stop. Waiting usually gives things a chance to stabalize and the engine will restsrt. When this happens again try loosening the cap and see if the engine will restart.....If it restarts immediately, REPLACE the fuel cap..Do Not leave it loose because this will cause other problems. If it is not the fuel cap the problem may be the filter, the fuel pump, or aome other fuel system malfunction.

1998 Dodge Ram Dies at times when I let off the gas and stop

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 liter in it, i couldnt keep it running when i stopped at stop signs, the two things i tried, was taking off the air cleaner and sprayed carb cleaner into the intake manifold with the engine running, using the carb cleaner and the throttle linkage to keep it running, before i did this i noticed the throttle valves were dirty, so I inspected the air filter housing and saw it was cracked in multiple places. The second thing i did was reset the computer using a scanner then took my truck out on the highway and drove at least 50 MPH for at least a mile which re-learned the computer. I hope this helps you, it sure worked for me.
