Mercedes e280 cdi has a oil leak

My car is leaking oil every time it is running, it leaves a trail and when I park it up and leave it for a while it will drop a whole load of oil, please can some one help.

SOURCE: Mercedes w124 E280 1994 model. The engine stalls

check condition of spark plugs and wires.. they can cause cut out at take off.
I have problems with Bosch spark plugs. But I love the Bosch ultra premium ignition wires
Also check for vauume leaks, intake hoses tight.etc.

if it is yellow it could be the aircon compressor, if it is really red to pink, power steering or automatic transmission leak

Find your fuse panel. Take a picture of it with your cell telephone. With the car off, with a volt meter, remove the fuses one at a time. Measure every slot to find out what is hot and what is not. Any Hot circuits should be examined closely to find out what is ON when the car is OFF.

Places to look ... light in the trunk??? is it on or off with the lid closed? Under the hood? Same. Do you have a radio that comes on with the key off??? GPS, you leave plugged in? Cell phone or other gadgetry you may have plugged in to the aux power supply? Any other lights? Parking lights for example? Security system? CB radio?

After you have checked these items, and if you find nothing, you may want to have your alternator examined. If you have a shorted diode in the alternator, the power may be draining back to ground through this shorted diode. You could perform this test yourself by unplugging or disconnecting the alternator during the periods when you are not driving the car. If this is the trouble, on day three, when you reconnect the alternator, two things you will note: 1) there will be a pretty big spark & 2) you will still have charge in the battery (evidenced by the spark)(there will be some spark no matter what ... but a big spark will mean a big drain). I have seen shorted diode problems fixed by inserting a toggle switch in the alternator power circuit. The alternator will still charge the battery when the switch is ON with the car running. When you stop the car, turn the switch off, power will not drain through the alternator to ground. Probably not the solution for your Mercedes. The real solution is to replace the alternator.

BTW - do you have a security system in your car? A thief proof radio? Check your owner's manual for precautions you should take before disconnecting your battery with regard to the anti theft features of your vehicle.

You say your battery is new and dead after three days. If fully charged on day one, and dead on day three, that means your battery has expended between 500 (economy battery) and 1000 (premimum battery) "amp hours" of power (500 amps / 72 hours = about 7 amps per hour going somewhere. (An 'amp hour' is one amp for one hour) Ohm's Law applies.

Loosing coolant

the test is easy
it uses the magic of the system has 12 to 14PSI pressure all the time.
hot. so park it get it hot. to 180F (old thermostats fail, they are #1 failure ,so why would you discount that?????)
ok its really hot , my pryo gun shows 180F ,ok real hot is true. no bs.
so now look for leaks.
if you see none
and the passenger toes are dry (heater core drips)
then there are on external leaks,
if true that, then its INTERNAL LEAKS!

head gasket is failing or the A/T or engine oil pan is full of AF.
are you running 50%^ AF all the time, ?????

everywhere you drive do you look after parking, for ground leaks.?
as you leave car and when you come back.
you must. or miss the boat.

Oil leak between oil pan and trans, but its just sometimes

That is the crankshaft rear main seal from the sounds of it.

Rear end seal leaks and leaves a trail of oil only when cold

As you are driving, friction makes the seal expand. Time to have a garage replace the rear end seal.

The oil light blinks intermittently. Restarting the engine makes it stop . I had an oil change performed 2000 miles ago and it is not low.

have someone put a mechanical gauge in place of the oil pressure sensor and record oil pressure, it should be between 20 and 60 psi, if that's ok, probably the sensor. unless you have means to check the circuit I'ld replace the sensor.

Transmission fluid leaking

Bars leak is ok, but if it is a seal, you'll need to drop the tranny pan and replace it. I don't know about Mercedes, but usually you have to remove the exaust pipes to take the pan off.

Replacing oil levl sensor due to oil leak.Is it urgent?

If the leak is small. just a couple of drops no problems.just check your oil level when u stop to get gas
