1998 Mercury Mountaineer Transmission issues..

Basically in a nutshell, I was driving this vehicle around for about 2 months before it hit the bed. The transmission seems to be having issues because it will run in reverse just fine, but it doesn't want to go into first gear and drive forward. If I rev it up to about 3-4rpm it slowly goes into gear and starts rollling and once it hits second gear, no problems..

off this vague description, does anyone have any ideas???????

also should note, the transmission fluid is correct as well as the fluid levels.

Sounds like servo/solenoid problems for those gears run the fault codes or have it inspected and properly diagnosed by an accredited transmission specialist shop
it is running with no reported noises or other problems so at this point it will not need a new transmission

sounds like the u-joints in the front axle are bad or were installed incorrectly they only come into play when the wheel is turned. These are the axle ujoints not the driveshaft ujoints

SOURCE: Added Power Steering Fluid, Checked the Automatic

The Automatic Transmission Fluid is supposed to be checked with the car running so there's a chance if you added fluid you've overfilled it. Also, Ford products require Type-F transmission fluid. Using the wrong kind can adversely impact the transmission's performance as well as do damage. Re-check the fluid level with the car running (preferably after 5 minutes or so to get it warm) and see if it's been overfilled. If not, verify if you've added fluid what type you used. If you used the wrong type, you should take the car (or tow) to a service station to have the fluid changed.

SOURCE: I want 2 change 2004 mercury mountaineer transmission fluid

The best way to change it is to flush it out You can do it yourself, but I do not recommend. A shop that is good like a Monro or Firestone usually charges about 100 bucks to flush and that includes the fluid. If you do it yourself, you will save about 60 dollars, but you risk damage to your radiator.

you will need a hose and an adapter. you back out the lower, or upper cooler line for your trans, whichever is the easiest to get to, (Some trucks have an auxiliary engine oil cooler, but make sure you are flushing the trans lines) put the adapter into the rad where you removed the line, and put a hose from each one down into a bucket. Have about 14 qt's of ford trans fluid ready. Put the funnel into the trans dip stick, and start the engine. pour the qts into the dipstick tube while the old fluid is pumped into the bucket. When you have about two gallons pumped into the bucket shut the engine off and reattach the line into the radiator. start up the engine and check your level. Fill with additional fluid if needed.

note: some say you should drop the pan. two things, you only change half the fluid when you do it that way, and second if you need to change the filter because it is clogged, it is too late for the transmission. The filter is only there to protect the valve body, not keep the fluid clean.

Hope this helps

My car wont go in park. how do you adjust the transmission linkage?

From Underneath the vehicle.. It is connected to the transmission arm via a set bolt and rod. If the rod is bent or the arm is damaged . It will not go into park or shift at all. This happens usually if you run over something that is high enough to scape or hit the bottom of the vehicle.. You will need two people ...one to put the lever in the proper position and the other put the transmission arm in park and set the rod the setscrew in place .. Nine times out of ten it is damaged and you will have to replace it.

I have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer when i'm driving down the road with the gas pushed in or the cruise control on it drives perfect shifts kinda hard tho but when i let off the gas or turn the cruise...

It could be your shift solenoid, or the wiring assembly for the shift solenoid, Ford has a TSB for it, it could also be a valve body gasket, I know the older explorers/mountaineers had issues with those as well.

2005 mercury mountaineer transmission light on wont pull

If you have been driving any vehicle, with any transmission
problems, you more than likely ruined it

You do have a check light on

Transmissions slip & act up long before your
even aware of it

Any use, even a few miles, pretty much is the end
& several thousand in repairs are possible these days

Those issues can be avoided for the most part, but
no one changes fluid every 3 years & continue to drive
them ,as they fail to recognize any problems
