Started the grand vitara, put it into reverse and it shut off. Now it will not start.Starter will not turn and no click from solenoid. Battery is ok and all lights work. Previously posted the wrong year,, sorry
Sounds like the ignition interlock at the transmission switch is out of adjustment or faulty. Bypass the key switch, at the starter, if it now cranks, it's in the interlock switch or the ignition switch.

It sounds like sticking lock tumblers since beating on it seems to make it work once in awhile. No other items in the column will die out and work again upon pounding on it

My wife left the ignition on with the lights on and drained the battery completely. I'm having the exact same problem. Any ideas how to fix it?
The problem with it not starting and what you described is most likely caused by the battery cables. You should replace the whole cable from each post on the battery all the way to where it connects to the engine. The part about it dieing in reverse could be related to the loss of ground connections on the computer.
