Sounds like the ignition interlock at the transmission switch is out of adjustment or faulty. Bypass the key switch, at the starter, if it now cranks, it's in the interlock switch or the ignition switch.

where would this interlock switch be located

Usually on the transmission, sometimes on the console under the gear position indicator panel if you have a floor shift, and is operated by the linkage connecting the two.

SOURCE: 2006 grand vitara - steering wheel locked - ignition wont turn

It sounds like sticking lock tumblers since beating on it seems to make it work once in awhile. No other items in the column will die out and work again upon pounding on it

SOURCE: Replaced the battery in my 2006 Suzuki Grand

My wife left the ignition on with the lights on and drained the battery completely. I'm having the exact same problem. Any ideas how to fix it?

1999 VW Bettle shuts off when put in reverse, and is iffy if it actually wants to start?

The problem with it not starting and what you described is most likely caused by the battery cables. You should replace the whole cable from each post on the battery all the way to where it connects to the engine. The part about it dieing in reverse could be related to the loss of ground connections on the computer.

2004 Grand Vitara won't start

the trans only blocks cranking so we can ignore the overdrive lamp.
when car will not start, (state , what engine you have first)? 2.0L I4 or V6?
the first thing to check is .
is the gas tank above 1/4?
is there spark. on all 4 to 6 spark plugs.
are all fuses good.
does the CEL lamp glow key on, if not the ECU/PCM is dead and there will be no spark or fueling ever. but fuses can blow and disable ECU.

2006 grand vitara will not start and solenoid will not click. Battery is fine.

you mean it wont crank, no car starts with a dead starter. unless push started.
wiggle the shifter lever, that is the PRN switch if the switch lies
and shows not Park the starter will be dead by DESIGN.
you can hot wire any starter solenoid and see if the starter works at any time.
if it does , the its not the starter, its the key line.
the key switch creates the key line signal. and goes to tranny then starter. if this line opens for ANY reasons, the stater (even good) will never crank.
this is to prevent , the old Audi lady from running over her kids.
it can be defeated. you can ever add an "override switch)
many do after seeing $200 PRN switch, dang.
ok you are impowered, (sorry so late )

2004 Pontiac grand prix gtp won't start- fully

You need a new starter solenoid. It is essentially a heavy duty remote switch that is activated by your ignition key switch. The solenoids get stuck or don't conduct well after 6 to10 years.

I replaced the battery in my 2006 Grand Vitara and it starts but when I shift it into reverse or drive the engine shuts down.

drive it a little to get it to relearn. Best bet is when you do something like this to always reset memory with a scan tool or you could have driveabilty issues at first.

Car no longer starts

Check battery terminals make sure they are not corroded and that the are tightly secured. If all is good the battery is at fault. Replace battery and then have charging system checked to make sure the alternator is working fine. Or you can remove the battery and have it load tested a t an Auto_zone for free.
