These models have a clutch attached to the fan called a clutch fan to test it before you start the van open up the bonnet and grab a fan blade spin it clock wise as hard as you can if it spins more then 5 times by its self its time to change the clutch fan, this maybe the cause of your over heating but a head gasket breach is a symptom of the over heating so depending one the severity of the damage to the head gasket its from $2000 to replace or reseal it with a quality re-sealer

- Check the radiator cap for proper sealing.
- Blow air from outside and inside of the radiator to clean the fine dust accumulated in the feathers and fins.
- Check the radiator for clogged inside. Clean the radiator after disassembling it.
- Check the water pump belt for looseness or wear.
- Check the thermostat valve.
- Check the cylinder head gasket or re-torque the cylinder head bolts.

The toyota previa uses a formed silicone gasket for the valve cover and the cover is held in place by metric shoulder bolts ( 10mm). The valve gasket leaks because you can't get enough preload on the bolts to re-seat the old gasket when it gets old and shrinks. The shoulder bolts only allow you to tighten the gasket enough to seat the shoulder on the bolt. If you continue to torque down the suspected bolts, you will snap the bolt off ( don't ask me how I know this ). You can either 1.)replace the old gasket with a new one or 2.) remove the existing bolts around the leak area and put in new metric bolts that do not have a shoulder. You may want to put in a small sleeve into the existing bolt hole but shorter than the thickness of the valve cover to account for the smaller diameter bolt. You can now torque down the bolt and get enough preload to seal the valve cover without removing the old gasket. Make sure you use a torque wrench ( in-lbs) or be very careful not to snap these small valve cover bolts.

Sounds like a head gasket leaking water in from the cooling system. Does it run OK? Any water in the oil on the dipstick and a mayonnaise type film on the oil filler cap?

Car keeps overheating

Assuming the engine is ok, no leaking head gasket or exhaust problem, you need to know if the radiator fan comes on when the engine reaches 225 degrees. It should also come on when you turn the ac on if the ac works.
Its also possible you have air in the cooling system.

Until you get it figured out use regular water. Replace thermostat and radiator/coolant tank caps. Thermostat regulates pressure in the motor and allows radiator to cool. Caps regulate atmosperic pressure. Either or both being bad will cause you system to siphon and fail.

the impellors in the water pump are prone to corrosion, especially if no or incorrect radiator additives have been used .this will cause water to stay in motor & boil whilst the water in the radiator stays cold because it cannot circulate.try flushing radiator ,installing a new thermostat (which is more than likely not opening )& radiator cap, refil with correct additive,.if the car still over heats then you will need to replace the water pump.bugger!!

Overheating van help needed thanx

Is the water being lost out of your overflow or from somewhere else? Your water pump may need to be replaced if the water is coming from your pump. If the water is being lost from your overflow, even when you first start the car and drive it cold, it most likely is compression gas blowing past your head gasket. If you lose no water for the first few minutes of driving until the engine gets warm, then it may be venting from over heating from another problem and not your head gasket.

Check for leaks.

It's odd that the temperature drops when the A/C is on. Your electric fans should be running when the A/C is on and when the water temperature rises. Check your fans when the engine is hot and the A/C is off. Also make sure the cooling system is full when you do this or a thermal switch may not sense the hot temperature. If your fans don't run, it could be a bad fan or switch. Turn on the A/C. Both fans should be running.

Check for debris/blockage of your radiator. If the "fins" are smashed or matted, the radiator won't funcion properly. You can try to "comb" them straight or replace it. Also check for evidence of sludge within your radiator.

Try replacing your thermostat. It is most likely no good anyway since it's been exposed to several overheatings and could possibly be the original culprit of your problem.

Come back with your findings.
