*Note* I understand I say k2500 here and silverado in the classing. They are basically identical trucks, however I was only giving a choice up to '99 with the k2500 model.
My truck: 2000 Chevrolet k2500 (6.5L/396cu.in. diesel)
When the blower on my truck is set to "off" or "0", due to the air circulation set-up, the air will flow through the proper setting. The amount of air is relative to the speed I'm going.
The probably is however when I turn the blower on. It will blow through the proper vent (sometimes) for about 1/2 - 2seconds and then start blowing through the foot setting and through the side window defrosters (located on the sides of the dash).
I did a little bit of "debugging" so-to-speak and also concluded:
- If I turn the A/C on, the light that says it's on will light up properly until I turn the blower on. The light will go off. I can't say if this affects the actual A/C or not as I don't really drive around with my A/C in mid winter.
- The re-circulate button does not light up at all.
Other key things:
- My truck does have a vacuum set-up.
- I have looked at some other questions that say a vacuum hose has broken or "sprung a leak" but none of them ask about the A/C or air re-circulation
My question, is this also a related problem to a vacuum hose breaking? If so, is there a certain diameter of tubing I need or does it vary from vehicle to vehicle?
It doesnt sound like a vacuum problem to me. it sounds like your switch in the dash has gone bad. if it was a vacuum it would only affect you selecting which vents you want the air to come out of.

I'm actually curious to know if there's a relay somewhere for the heater? Particularly under the glove box area is where I've been told. I'm not sure if there's any truth to this.
I have learned that there is nothing with the vacuum pump as the only thing vacuum on my truck was the waste gate controller and that long been changed to mechanical and the vacuum lines plugged.
