The mercury sable sedan 2004 has died three times.
1. The first two times was while backing out. Car rumbles, stalls and won't turn over.
2. Third time was yesterday while driving 65 mph. The car suddenly slowed down, felt as though something was pulling us. All warning lights went on. oil light, engine light, ABS light and exclamation light. The car won't catch or turn over.
3. The fuel sensor has been replaced.
4. If the car sits awhile, after an hour, It will start up.
5. All diagnostics show that there is nothing wrong.
6. GM mechanics charged my mom more than $375 after finding nothing wrong.
7. The fuel sensor was replaced by our mechanic.
Please help. Yesterday, Jan 31st was a scary when the car died on the freeway.

SOURCE: Check charging system icon keeps coming on
I had the same problem with a 99 sable and it was the drive belt
SOURCE: car has been sitting for awhile--gas tank was less
dependung on the cars make and model you might have to take the gas tank off to get at it would be inside the gas tank
SOURCE: Occasionally my 99 Sable won't restart till after 3/4 hour wait
There is a condition called thermal breakdown in ignition parts( ie: spark control modules). Pretty common really in older stuff. Why does it happen only after shutdown? because of a condition called heat soak. underhood temps rise higher than ever right after shutdown. Your ignition module is mounted to the side of the distributor. If practical when the problem happens pour cold water on the module give it one minute and see if it starts(wont damage it) if it starts right up you proved it bad. Hope I helped Thanks
SOURCE: replaced o2 sensosor, SES light back on
If he used a "universal" O2 sensor, you could have a wiring problem. I had the exact same behavior on a Mazda MPV. The universal O2 sensors have to be crimped to the old sensor connector, which can cause problems. You can check the wiring closely, or insist that he use an OEM sensor, which will have the proper connector attached.

I would start with the cars coputer. Does this happen after its been running for a while or does it happen at all different stages of car being on.
