Intermittent starting problem/shutdown problem - 1991 Dakota

I've got a 1991 Dodge Dakota 5.2L (auto. transmission). I first had problems with it cranking but not starting. Later it would suddenly shutdown, sometimes while idling, sometimes while driving at highway speed. It is an intermittent problem that has left me stuck on the roadside on more than one occasion. I've replaced: ignition coil, pick-up coil, distributor cap, and ignition rotor. Any ideas?

For clarification: It is fuel injected. When it is acting up, it cranks over fine but it won't start (as if the engine is turning but not trying to fire). Have not replaced ignition module. Problem has occurred both when hot and when cold. It is currently running fine but it will occur again. Also, on one occasion, acted underpowered (but didn't run rough) driving down the highway and it would rev up to high rpms before shifting and would downshift when going up a slight hill and rap out. Wouldn't go over about 40-45 mph. After being parked for about 30 minutes, went back to normal (not sure if this is related to the other problem or not).

Is your truck fuel injected? Does the truck crank over fine but no start? Just trying to narrow things down to try and help.

My 1991 dodge dakota truck will shut off while I'm

Dakotas and Durangos are notorious for crankshaft position sensor failures. Often these start off as intermittent issues. When they occur, it's like someone shuts off the key. If may start right back up or may take minutes or hours to clear up. It isn't the only thing that can cause this issue, but is the first one I'd look at. The sensor is relatively cheap ($50.00) and is easily installed as it is attached to the transmission bell housing.

Is their a fuelpump reset button on my dodge dakota pickup 4by4 3.9 (le)

No.
The Fuel Pump is controlled by the SBEC Controller through the Auto Shutdown
Relay (ASD). For testing purposes and using an Enhanced Scan Tool, both ASD and Fuel Pump operation can be easily tested.
Also, the Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC) WHEN Ignition Switch is in the
RUN position, requires a distributor reference signal or it will de-energize the ASD.

sounds like you've been really trying, you say there is no power at the light bulb socket and you checked your switch at the transmission. did you check for power at the transmission. this will tell you if the problem is at the front of the truck or in the rear.
