I had the same thing on the same model car. Sounded like I had a gerbil living (running around in a little wheel) in my dashboard. I think the replacement part is called an accuator (it is relatively inexpensive) but the whole dashboard has to be removed to put it in. It controls the opening and closing of the vents. Apparently even taking the dashboard off is not as difficult as dealers often indicate - but they bill for a lot of time - so the job is an expensive one unless you do it yourself. I ended up having a friend do it for me.

You will more than likely need to replace the whole heater control unit in the dash. Thier like mini computers now and usually if one side goes down it means the whole unit is shot.
