The drain plug is actually just a screw that requires a large phillips head to remove. It is located on the passenger side at the bottom of the radiator. The best way to locate it is to find the tube that runs from the coolant reservoir to the radiator and look underneath where it hits the radiator. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ty, picking up car tomorrow, died on me. had to take to an unknown repair shop $440, he say I need to flush radiator and it needs flush asap and recommended a shop. after looking online can't understand how he couldn't have the equipment to do himself! the shop he recommended will be appx $130. broker than broke now. so thought me and daughter would try

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2013

That is nonsense A complete new radiator is only $150.00 Why did you ask where a radiator cap is if the vehicle is in a repair shop

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2013

I still need to have the radiator flushed, his "part" is complete. READ what I typed.

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2013

a new radiator runs between 150-300, not including labor

  • Anonymous Jan 31, 2013

But flushing is only running a garden hose and water thru it That won't fix anything inside the radiator You were told you have sludge in your radiator That could actually be sealer from someone trying to fix a leak in the past The radiator has to be replaced You need a radiator shops opinion if you only want to have it cleaned Only a raditator shop can do that & todays aluminium radiators are seldom tanked out they are replaced r

Any time you don't see a cap on the actual radiator
you follow the top hose to what is called a engine fill
cap

It won't look like a raditator cap,it will be plastic & near
the thermostat on most vehicles & near the top of the
motor or cooling system, just have to look for it

If your have problems, running water thru the rad won't help, I doubt

A new radiator & thermostat may, if you don't have major gasket
issues & overheating

Flushing the radiator won't fix overheating or no cabin heat

I keep mentioning those because no one coming to this
site ever tells use the real issues or why they ask

the mechanic told me what all he did, I didn't understand most. replaced thermostat, belt, said water pump seized up and the fan was staying on. draincock? stopped up and sludge in radiator. he said he DID NOT have the equipment to properly flush the radiator

Should be next to battery look on top radiator should see radiator cap next to battery on driver side.if you dont see radiator cap your radiator overflow jug has the radiator cap in which where you add coolant to radiator when coolant low just pour coolant until coolant stay at full cold mark.

SOURCE: tire sizes

Open the front drivers door... or the passenger side front door... there should be a sticker there indicating correct tire sizes as well as pressures.

SOURCE: o2 sensors on a 99 mercury cougar v6

I just got done replacing the O2 sensors in my 99 Cougar due to throwing a P0135 malfunction code. There's 3. Facing the engine there's one in the front coming off of the front header, which is easy to get to. Another more tricky one if between the engine and the fire wall on the rear header pipe. The third is under the vehicle behind the transmission pan on top of the exhaust. In order to replace the O2 sensor near the fire wall you will need to remove the 4 retaining bolts for the ECM module and move it out of the way. Additionally you will need to remove the 2 retaining nuts for a wiring harness that is seated below the ECM module. Pay close attention to the connectors because the front and under vehicle O2 sensors have round connectors the one near the firewall has a squared connector. I was able to replace all 3 by myself in approximately 35 minutes. If your throwing a O2 heater malfunction code it is most likely going to be the sensor near the firewall. make sure that you know someone with a code reader so the code can be cleared. If you're do for an emmissions inspection be sure to put at least 40 miles on the new O2 sensor with different types of driving (e.g. highway, coasting, decellerated turns and rapid acceleration). Gotta love project cars for your kids!!

99 mercury cougar v6 2.5L, temp gauge is reading hot after thermostat change why? is it a air bubble or is it a bad temp. sending unit? any other ideas? please help

May be a defective thermostat or place in the wrong direction. If it's properly installed, might want to check the fan operation which may be producing the overheating.
If fan is good, one way to remove air in the coolant system is to run vehicle while all heaters on. take extra coolant and stop along the way to top off if needed. While driving, keep listening for the fan to begin running when vehicle reaches high temperatures.
If you continue to experience overheating, may want to take to a local known repair shop for further troubleshooting.

Over heating 2001 Mercury Cougar 2.5 manual

is it losing water? if not is your fan kicking on? if losing water, place piece of cardboard under veh at night to help pinpoint where water is leaking. if not losing water and fan does'nt come on check fan relay. if loses water and don't see leak over night on cardboard, then water pump is leaking thru weep hole but only after heats up and pressure is on need to replace water pump.

My 1999 cougar is over heating i have changed the thermostat and the radiator already and the water pump is good but the car is still over heating should i get a coolant flush to see if that clears it up...

Why would you even think about a coolant flush?

You have a new radiator, so all that is left is the heater core
That isn't your problem

You lost all the coolant when you did the radiator & thermostat
So what is there to flush ?

No bottle of doctor do good will fix your issues

Diagnose the main cause

How do you know the water pump is good?
Was it in your hand and still had an impeller that wasn't eaten away?
Was it pumping coolant and the system built up pressure that you
actually tested

Have you tested for combustion gases in case the head gasket is gone?

Hi, the upstream sensors are at the base of the exhaust manifolds. Bank 1 is in back by the firewall. Bank 2 is in front by the radiator (#7 in picture below).

1997 Mercury Cougar

There should be a diagram of how the belt goes on right under the hood, right next to the radiator, if it is gone then go to "autozone.com" and look up the info there.
