If the engine is reaching normal temp, you could have air in the system and the radiator could be low on coolant.

SOURCE: Heat/AC Blower fan speed only works on High

Alot of people have the same problem with the fan switch and blown bulbs. There really is no fix for this. Jeep really screwed up when designing the heater control assembly. The cheapest solution is to buy another unit off Ebay. Can always go to the dealer but be ready to PAY for there mistakes.

Check to ensure you have coolant/water in the radiator. No fluid means you can't transfer heat from the engine to the heater core...

SOURCE: 1996 jeep grand cherokee blower works but no heat

Since your blower is working and it is a heat issue, thats where we'll start,First thing is have you checked the coolant level in the radiator when engine is cold, make sure it is filled to top, next verify you have coolant in reserve ,Start your van and get it up to normal operation temperature,If your heat gauge on the dash works correctly it should be 190 degrees,Now lift the hood and locate the two heater hoses going into the heater assembly at the fire wall,Both hoses should be hot to hold on to,if both are hot and no heat inside your problem will be the blend air door in heater assembly.
if neither hose is that hot you need to replace the thermostat in the engine to get it up to 195 degrees.
if one hose is hot and one is luke warm then the heater core is blocked and to blame. hope this helps you.

Heater does not heat, AC and fan work fine

Is the engine getting to operating temp? If the t-stat is stuck open, engine will not heat up and neither will the heater, gets lukewarm. Or is it a door problem in the HVAC plenum? Go to www.heatertreater.net for solutions.

I have very little heat from the heater in my 94 jeep GCL. It went out at the same time the temp gage stopped working. I just had the engine rebuilt? What do I look at first?

Did you replace the thermostat? If it's bad your engine could be running cold, not letting the coolant get hot enough to get proper heat AND making your temperature gauge read cold.

Heater want get hot, changed thermostat, fluid levels good, car is heating properly

Probably a plugged up heater core. You can try to disconnect the heater hoses from it and flush it out both ways with your garden hose. If that doesnt work you'll have to replace it.

not sure on your cherokee but often there is a valve in the heater hose line just as the water enter the heater core .. the valve is controled by the the selection of heat or cool .. those valves frequently clog up and need replaced ... you might also have an air lock in your heater core .. if air is trapped in there then it doesnt want to come out and it occupies a portion of the heating surface .. you can take the top heater hose loose with the engine running but not hot .. that will blead off any air in the core .. it will also show you if you have a clog .. you should have lot of water flow thru there with the engine running .. you may also have a bad thermostat .. if that the case then the engine wont get up to temperature preventing the heater from working properly ..

Over heating quickly

First, start engine and attempt to re-fill with the heater on hot. Sometimes they can get airbound. There is little chance this is being caused by the water pump. Far better chance that the radiator is internally plugged. Jeep radiators are notoriously small for the application and have little room for "error" Partial flow will cause this problem... I've seen it as the major reason aside from a head gasket failure for overheating (assuming you put the stat in correctly) I use a swimming pool pumpfilled with household "lime away" rust & lime remover (which is usually what obstructs core tubes). to backflush these, but you may wish to have a shop do it in a more "normal" way.To do this correctly, the radiator must be removed or rust will remain in tank.

Previa Heater Problem

Previa heaters are usually ultra-reliable.
So, regarding your question, the only reason for the temp gauge to drop down with the heater on is the thermostat is sticking open, or you have a lower than recommended thermostat installed. The factory thermostat is a 192 degree F/89 degrees C stat. Down your way, a lot of the parts places vend the "summer" thermostats, and I suspect that this is your problem.
Look to see what the temp degrees that are printed on the stat. Should be 192 F or 89 C. The "summer" stats are 185 F/ 85 C. Also, make sure that your stat has a small "wiggle valve", some aftermarket stats do not have this. Very important. Install the stat with the "wiggle valve" pointing straight up/12 o'clock...
Regarding your trans dropping out od OD, this is because the coolant temp is dropping below 172 degrees F. This is the threshold for the OD to engage. Below 172/no OD engagement.
