Everytime i fill the gas tank, i have to stay on the key for 5-10 seconds to keep turning the engine over, and when it finally starts, i have to keep the gas pressed to keep the engine idling at least 3000 rpms to keep it from sputtering and quitting. i have to keep the engine at high revs for at least a minute before it isnt a problem anymore, and it never happens again until the next fill up. I have even tried stopping the pump myself instead of letting it stop itself thinking maybe the fuel was coming too far upinto the fill tube, but the same thing happened.

NOW THAT THE WEATHER IS HOT CAR IS CHUGING A T STOP LIGHTS .... HAVE TO KEEP ON GAS ..... I HAVE REPLACED PURGE VALVE AND CANISTER AND SENSERS BANK ONE AND TWO .... THEN THE CODE CAME OUT AND SAID CATALACCONVERTER ... THAT DONT SEEM RIGHT EVERY TIME IT GETS CODED ITS DIFFERENT ... I THINK THE FUELING SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE RECALLED THIS IS THE SECOND ONE I HAVE BOUGHT AND SAME PROBLEM 2005SANT FE AND ELANTRA
This may solve a lot of the problems I've read on this page...He has a 2000 Hyundai Santa Fe. HAD many of the problems listed in this
site...WE Found that the filler pipe to the tank had rusted thru to where there was only 1/2" wide x 1 1/2' LONG metal holding the
line together...PROBLEM was created buy the COVER plate that is to PROTECT the line....INSTEAD it was FULL of dirt,sand, Mud,
MOST of it WET. ALL this = RUST PROPLEMS & JUNK , WATER, etc. to get into the tank along with the system NOT building up pressure (so call cap problems, etc.)
WE ended replacing the filler pipe, cleaned out the tank, replaced
the filter, SPRAYED the line before installing it with several layers
of under coating paint, and put a bead of sealer around the Cover
plate to keep out further junk of getting in...
That was a month ago---so far NO problems...Knock on wood.
ALL this wouldn't of happened if they would of sealed up that cover plate better ! Also I forgot---We did spray under coating over the
entire OUTSIDE of the plate and wheel well....

I have looked at the other suggestions posted. It doesn't sound to me that it is a water problem. Water would not be able to get thru the system that rapidly. Secondly the fuel pump when ignition is turned on pumps the gas to the fuel system. When pressure is achieved the pump shuts down. This gives evidence that the pump is operating. Not yet diagnosing my problem I am leaning three possible condition . 1. Purge Valve malfunction.2. Charcoal filter. 3. As suggested a leak in the fill tube. I notice much rust in that area below the fill door on the body. Easiest probably to check for the rust hole.Than I will replace the purge valve and go deeper if a fault is not found.I will post what I find. L boel n

Not sure it should happen that fast but it may.... buy yourself a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze and put them in the gas tank... sounds like you have a lil water problem ... this stuff is basically alcohol (not the kind you drink) and it will suck up the water.

It sounds like the exhaust system is clogged. Try looking under your vehicle with a flashlight and look for bends/kinks in the exhaust pipes. I had a similar problem with my car, when the catalytic converter broke apart, and clogged the exhaust. i could barely reach 20km/hr, and the engine would shut off at 2500 rpm. Replacing the catalytic converter fixed my problem.

would this apply even though it was happeniing this summer and fall when freezing temperatures were not an issue? thanks for the suggestion though
Once I fill up the tank with anti-freeze then the problem accur. So may be water is an issue ? don't know
tried using gas line antifreeze but it didn't help at all. i notice the small 1/4" rubber line running from the top of the gas tank to the top of the fill nozzle and disassembled the check valve in that line and a little gas came out of the fill nozzle side. I thought that gas in the line may have been the problem, but it still acts the same exact way. The check valve im talking about is installed with flow headed INTO the tank, I assume so as gas is used, it doesn't create a vaccuum. Is the check valve installed correctly? Any other ideas would be appreciated. Like i said, it starts up first time, everytime, except just right after a fill up, i have to keep turning it over, and turning it over, and once i get it, it sputters and sputters so i keep giving it 3000rpms of gas peddle and let off JUST A BIT in order to get it into drive, then zoom away from the pump and onto the road. Once i get to the stop sign a couple of thousand yards down from the gas station exit, the car stays running fine. I just cannot figure it out.
