1987 Nissan 300zx occassionally won"t start

When key is turned on absolutely nothing happens. Engine doesn't turn over. Has new battery, new cables, new alternator. Runs fine when it starts. Could be driving down the road, stop for gas, then it won't start. May start with a jump, or starts after sitting for a while. It is not overheating. Does it about every two weeks.

Your starter and/or solenoid might be giving out. I had a similar problem on my 85. Eventually it got so bad that it wouldnt start at all and got it towed.

You'll need to find out if you have power at the starter when the key is in the start position, and if the engine will turn over by hand.

Do the dash lights go out when you turn the key, If so then have the battery load tested, With a bad cell in the battery all lights and radio will work,( only a small draw on the battery) but when a heavy draw as in starter the battery will fail.

When i turn the key it just makes a click sound and nothing happens

If the battery is charged and the cables are clean, you are probably hearing the starter solenoid on the starter trying to engage.
If the starter can not be jumped directly, I would agree the starter is faulty.
