Parking brake tension

Im trying to find out how to tighten my parking brake, I have a 2002 Chevrolet malibu, I just changed all the brakes on it and could not get the parking brake to be tight like it was several thousand miles ago. I can see the cable for the brake but can not see any sort of way to tighten it up at all. If you could possibly help me, i would greatly appreciate it.
oh and new struts were just put on the front along with all of the brakes.

The hand brake on Chevy's is self adjusting, if there is a cable to tight, just follow the car from the back wheel inside to the front, in the back inside you will see a cable conduit going in to drum or disk, follow it on both sides are going to join in to one in a triangle shaped to both inside drums, right on center of joint you will see tightening mechanism like long treated bolt and two nuts, loose one and go the oposite way

Tried to replace the rear brake pads on a Malibu LS 2008. used a C-clamp but could not get the cylinder in enough for the new pads to go over the rotor. Saw a response for a 2006 malibu, does the cylinder...
On the face of the piston you will see two small holes. There is a tool that fits into them so you can screw the piston down into it's retracted position. you can't do that with clamp.

Fuel probelms
Try hitting the brake off and on to see if the rpm changes when you do that with the car in park. If it does, you may have a ruptured brake booster. A fluctuating rpm while your car is in park with the brake on indicates a vacuum loss. Other things may cause a vacuum leak including the air conditioner controls inside the vehicle. Other things that cause this may be cruise control or your Air Conditioners high idle solenoid.

try to lay back look yp into dash where the brake pedal is and see if there is any wires hanging down, Regards Lee Davidian

How to adjust the parking brake cable on a golf 2002
Remove center console extension
  • With parking brake released, depress brake pedal forcefully one time.
  • With parking brake released, tighten cable adjustment nuts until levers (arrow) on brake calipers lift off of stops.
  • Maximum 1.5 mm (0.059 inch) from stop (arrow) is permissible on each side
  • Pull parking brake on 3 times and then release again.
  • Check that both wheels turn freely.

    Adjusting Padking Brake with 4 wheel disc brakes.
    Hope this helps. This is out of the factory manual. Let me know if this works for you.
    PARKING BRAKE NOTE: Tensioner adjustment is only necessary when the tensioner, or a cable has been replaced or disconnected for service. When adjustment is necessary, perform adjustment only as described in the following procedure. This is necessary to avoid faulty park brake operation.
    1. Raise vehicle.
    2. Fully back off cable tensioner adjusting nut at equalizer to create slack in cables.
    3. Remove rear wheel/tire assemblies. Remove brake calipers and rotors.
    4. Verify park brakes are in good condition and operating properly.
    5. Verify park brake cables operate freely and are not binding, or seized.
    6. Check park brake shoe adjustment.
    7. Reinstall rotors and make sure rotors turn freely.
    8. Reinstall brake calipers. Tighten guide pin bolts to 41 n·m (30 ft.lbs.)
    9. Reinstall wheel/tire assemblies after brake shoe adjustment is complete.
    10. Lower vehicle enough for access to park brake foot pedal. Fully apply park brakes
    NOTE: Leave park brakes applied until adjustment is complete.
    1. Raise vehicle again.
    2. Mark tensioner rod 6.35 mm (1/4 in.) from edge of tensioner bracket Adjustment Mark On Cable Tensioner Rod
    3. Tighten adjusting nut at equalizer until mark on tensioner rod moves into alignment with tensioner bracket
    CAUTION: Do not loosen, or tighten the tensioner adjusting nut for any reason after completing adjustment.
    1. Lower vehicle until rear wheels are 15-20 cm (6-8 in.) off shop floor.
    2. Release park brake foot pedal and verify that rear wheels rotate freely without drag. Verify pedal returns to fully released position.

    Parking brake pedal goes to floor
    Hello;
    The parking brake cables may be stretched and in need of adjustment. Follow the cables along to a nut. Then you can tighten the adjusters up on both sides until you have the proper tension. Also make certain none of the brackets are bent or broken that the cables ride through.
