2000 mercury cougar wont start

My 2000 mercury cougar will not start! It is not the starter or battery or fuel pump! What could it be?

I'm having the same problem. My car acts like it wants to turn over and is getting gas, but won't. We tried starter fluid thinking that it may be the fuel pressure regulator or something, but it started to backfire as well. I'm running out of ideas and need to get it fixed. What could it be???

What is anti-theft light doing? It should come on solid for about 2 sec after you turn the key on then turn off. If it is flashing after this then it is not seeing the computer chip in the key and you have a PATS problem.

1994 cougar will turn over but wont start, i put start fkuid and start normal

If it starts when you spray in starter fluid it would sound like a fuel supply problem. Make sure you are getting fuel and have a sufficient supply. Possibly a bad fuel pump or pressure regulator.

Mercury cougar wont start

My first suspicion is the battery connections may be lose and also the battery may now be run down. If you take the terminal connections off and clean them and the terminal posts so that they are shiny clean and charge the battery you can try again. If the car starts, that was the problem. If it doesn't, then look for the starter solenoid and lose connections there and also look toward the starter next. A tech with a volt meter can run independent checks and narrow it down further but having good connections and a charged battery are necessary to get started with the other tests.

1999 mercury cougar. won't start...cranks...battery ok.

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.
