VW BEETLE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE

I was driving about 60 mph on the freeway when the transmission light flashed red. I immediately went to pull off of the freeway. Within 10 seconds of the transmission light flashing, all of the dash lights turned on and the care lost power. I managed to get to the side of the freeway where the car was putting out a lot of white smoke. The smoke stopped after about 2-3 minutes for about a minute when all of a sudden thick black smoke started coming out. I got out of the car and checked the engine when I saw embers underneath and the engine was on fire. I managed to get out, but the car was completely up in flames within minutes.

My question was what could have caused that to happen. I'm completely clueless as to how a car can go from running perfectly fine to being in flames within minutes.

Of course I would have to look at the remains, but my guess would be a cooling line or seal ruptured in the transmission, causing trans fluid to be blown onto the engine and the hot exhaust pipes.

I only bought the car 5 months ago. If a car had undergone a full inspection like it was said that it had been, would something like that have been noticed or is a cooling line or seal rupture in the transmission an all of a sudden kind of occurance? I read somewhere that the fuse box in the 2004 convertible gls turbo beetles are located on top of the battery and if the car overheats, the wires can melt and spark and cause an engine fire. When the hood was first opened it looked like most of the fire was coming from the driver side of the engine nearest the front of the car where I believe the battery was.

SOURCE: 2003 VW Jetta TDI Check Engine Light Issue

Try disconnecting the battery (unhook on of the terminals) wait for like 15 mins, hook the terminal once again and start the car. I also own a 2003 Jetta and once my engine light would come on after 2 mins of driving. Disconnecting the battery is like resetting the computer and hopefully the sensor.

SOURCE: Engine won't start

The fact the engine rotates indicates a good battery, that's eliminated from the search.
The problem is of Main/Auxiliary Power Supply. Trace the Main Battery cacle from the Starter, if it has more than 1 Power cable attached, looking for a connector break running back to the Power Box. If the Starter has only 1 supply cable, then look for a loose joint on that Battery to Power Box Connector Block, or broken 'Spade' connector. If again all appears ok, by using the "Idiot" diagram, on the Power Box and Fuse Box, pull each Maxi and Service Fuse and Relay in turn, looking for a Failure. Should this not detect the fault come back to me again.
Regards,DT

My cars check engine light went on and it became sluggish, then i notieced i was running 4000 rpms at 50 mph

Hi there:
When the light comes on, one or more diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are stored in the engine control module. These DTCs remain even if the light goes out. To address a Check Engine Light problem, the DTCs are retrieved and the appropriate troubleshooting information is followed in order to determine the problem.

The Four Most Common Check Engine Light Scenarios and What to Do:
* The Check Engine Light turns on and off or flickers.
If the Check Engine Light comes on in the city but goes off on the freeway, then the fault is present during city driving conditions. Pay attention to whether or not the vehicle runs or drives any differently when the Check Engine Light illuminates. If vehicle performance does change, drive the car as little as possible and take it to be checked by a service professional as soon as possible. If there is no change in vehicle performance, you can drive home, but have it inspected as soon as possible. In this condition, you run a risk of the vehicle dying or not starting.

* The Check Engine Light comes on and stays on.
If the Check Engine Light illuminates constantly during driving with no noticeable driving or performance problems, there is a permanent fault in the emission control system. When this happens, the computer that controls the emission system usually has a backup program that runs while the fault is present. (These backup programs are often referred to as "limp home" mode programs.) You should get the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, but in most cases, the vehicle will continue to operate, though you run a risk of it dying or not starting.

* The Check Engine Light illuminates, stays on, and there are performance problems.
This means that a vital component of your emission control and engine management system has a serious problem. It usually involves a component or system needed for the vehicle to run at all. In most cases, drive the vehicle as little as possible. In many cases, the vehicle is not safe to drive at all -it could stop or stall out at any moment. It is best to pull over to a safe place and have the vehicle towed to an automotive diagnostician for a thorough inspection and repair.

* The Check Engine Light light comes on and blinks in a steady pattern while driving.
Don't confuse this steady pulsing of the Check Engine Light light (usually one or more flashes per second) with a flicker (see above). The Check Engine Light may stay on steadily or it may flash when the vehicle is accelerated. This is very serious. There is a severe failure of the emission control system that is causing the engine to misfire to the point that the catalytic converter is damaged each time the Check Engine Light flashes. It may mean that the catalytic converter is overheating to the point that it will glow red or, in extreme cases, start a fire on the underside of the vehicle. Immediately pull over to a safe place and have your vehicle towed to an automotive diagnostician for repair. Vehicles can be severely damaged and even destroyed by fire if this condition is ignored for too long.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Over heating

as stated, gotta be the thermostat... when the water reaches a certain temp this valve must open to allow coolant to flow thru the radiator or the water in the engine will get too hot and cause significant long term damage. It's good that you pull over immediately and let your engine cool off. A good emergency remedy to get the car to a safe place or a repair facility, is to run the heater at full blast. effectively using your heater core as a radiator. not ideal but will get a you a few more miles down the road.

Check engine light

You can try to google "Mouse Meat Inc". The owner, Earl, he knows everything about VW. You can try to give him a call or contact with him, he will tell you how to solve your problems. I had him fix my car before and ever since then my beetle is problem free. He's the one you want to talk to, he's way better than any dealers. He's located in Tacoma, WA, if it's not anywhere near you, he can even try to hook you up with someone he knows that's close to your location. Definetely give him a call!
