Flashing exclaimation sign with a yellow circle around it

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus and yesterday as I was driving a flashing exclaimation signal with a yellow circle came on. What does this indicate. The car was bought used and it didn't come with an owner's manual.

My 2005 ford taurus has two d 's on it . one is in a circle and one is not. can u tell me which one is over drive. i have been driving in the gear with the d with the circle around it.
The d which is inside a circle is overdrive. The d with out a circle is non-overdrive.

its a check transmission light. You need to take it to a transmission shop and they can read the problem code and tell you whats wrong.
