My 89 celica st often times i will go out in the morning and it wont start. The starter will make a single loud click but wont turn over. If i continue to turn over my ignition it sometimes will start sometimes wont. A jump box will not start it but as soon as i jump it with a nother car it fires right up.
I have all my lights, and my battery gauge is readuing normal. Ive replaces the alternator, starter several times ( both with aem starters and toyota denso starters) have had a few batteries, and still no fix. I replaced both my relays, after it warms up it usually wont happen but if I turn it on and off time and time again in a short period it will stop starting.
thanks
There is either a cable not getting a very good connection, solenoid has problems, or there is a wiring leading to a relay that has a bad connections. How is your ignition? Is it loose or have loose wires?
also check the magnetic switch mounted on the starter housing, is supplied by
current from the starting switch circuit of the ignition switch. This
magnetic action of the switch mechanically engages the starter clutch
assembly and electrically closes the heavy switch which connects it to
the battery. The starting switch circuit consists of the starting
switch contained within the ignition switch, a transmission neutral
safety switch or clutch pedal switch, and the wiring necessary to
connect these in series with the starter solenoid or relay.
Replace the Battery cables,,or at least clean and replace them,,make sure you are getting a really good ground from the battery to the motor and frame.
Also,,make sure the positive lead from the battery is making a good connection with the starter or the starter solenoid.
My celica 89' convertible... would only start with a jump cable... Battery Guage would show that the battery is being fully charged whil driving.. but once i turn the car off, it would not start instead would show battery completely drained.
I remembered that everything was fine before i SPRAYED ANTI-RUST can over the engine (Lightly).. so I suspected "Short Circuit"... dis-engaged Ground wire.. and cleaned the entire engine bay.. and poured grease cutting kitchen dish washing detergent... cleaned ground wire really well.. and connected everything... Engine Starts right away! :)

I am actually having the same problem. Grab a 8 gauge or 10 gauge wire and touch one end to the starter and the other to the positive side of the battery. If the battery is fine then this conferms that there is a problem with power going through the main harness to the starter from the battery.
