Our mechanic says that it will cost $670 to replace our 2002 Nissan Altima's alternator. Is that fair? He said the alternator options (new and refurbished) are in the $320-$370 range. The rest is labor.

Thanks. Are you in a city or rural area?

  • dvaughan196 Jan 29, 2009

So apparently its the parts dealer who is jacking up the price. Is it worth it to buy it ourselves for $250 and have them put it in? The warranty wouldn't be the same.

  • dvaughan196 Jan 29, 2009

Managed to knock them down on the price some. They waived one fee. And I'm going to pick up the part myself from their dealer, and they went with a cheaper refurbished one, so the total is now $548. Still painful, but better than before.

Thanks very much for all your help!

Well, its seems a little pricey. i difinetly would check around. im showing a new alternater at autozone for $250 -$60 when you return the old one. as far as the labor, that might be the going rate. theres a little bit more to it that normal car:

  1. Drain the cooling system below the upper radiator hose level.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Negative battery cable
    • Upper radiator hose
    • Alternator electrical harness, harness stay and the harness-to-A/C compressor
    • Throttle cable
    • Loosen the adjusting bolt
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Alternator mounting bolts
    • Alternator from the engine
  • I hope this info helps---lebones

this always a little mark up on parts shops can not live on labor alone.do you have another shop you can take it to if not you dont have much choice so shops wont put your parts on and your right no warrenty.

1995 Nissan Altima - replacing alternator

Yes.  Have him purchase a Haines or Chiltons Manual at Auto Zone or similar store.  I have changed 2 alternators on my 95 Altima in my time and I am not an expert mechanic.  Also check out:
    http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairGuide.htm?pageId=0900c1528007871b

Pretty good primer for the novice.

I did not remove the belt all the way. Merely slipped it off the old alternator pulley and then slip the new alternator onto the old belt and then tightened/adjust the belt as needed when done.
    Good luck.
