Changed out the thermostat and burped the system. The next two days the car ran fine. Third day the car went from operating temp. to 3/4 real quick and just as quick dropped down to 1/2 again. The fourth day did the same on the way to work. 8 hours later did the same but did not cool back down continue to rise and I pulled over as quickly as possible to prevent more damage. 30 mins later the car cooled off long enough to get back to the house only two streets over but during that time the fans did not kick on. Why would the car continue to keep overheating? 3.4 engine,
You could still have air in the system but I would also check the water pump on this.
Testimonial: "Will the water pump provide any other signs of failure that would help diagnose this issue, because I have read on gm site that the water pump normally makes noises when it goes bad or the bearings break. "

You need to get the engine full of coolant. Air is trapped in system. Use bleed valve

make sure the cooling fans are working and most vehicles will turn on the fans when you first start and A/c is in max mode
SOURCE: overheating car will shut off after 20 min will run again
maybe replacing the thermostatic fan switch would fix it.

If the top hose is hot and the bottom is cold, your definitely not getting circulation. You,ve already done alot of work to this vehicle so you have pretty much answered your own question. About the only thing left is the heater core. Of course, I dont want to be the one to tell you it is definitely the heater core because obviously I am not looking at the vehicle. But If i was a betting man, thats where my money would be.
on that motor they are prone to blowen head gaskets you need to do pressure check of the cooling system

I ran the car in idle to check and see how the car is running. When in idle the car would jump from 1/2 to 3/4 and then cool back down and would do this every 5 min. Is this still a good sign that the water pump is going bad. I also checked the hoses and saw a solution that stated if one is cold and one is hot then it could be the core but all the hoses are too hot for touch top hose, bottom hose, hose from over flow, hose from radiator cap. I am not sure this has anything to do with this current issue but when car is hot and off there are no noise, but when there is power to the car ( not started just on) there is gargling noise in the dash board area. Any ideas?
