Reverse lights don't work on vw passat 95

Hi, The reverse lights don't seem to work.  I've checked the bulbs and the fuse and they're all ok.  I think it might be the reverse switch but I don't know where it is located.   Please could you tell me how to access it and if it's a complicated job.   Thanks John

My 1993 Trooper's reverse lights don't work. I've checked all the fuses and changed the bulbs out but this was fruitless. Please help.

I had the same Problem with my 1994 Trooper. I was smoking (painting with translucent black paint) my taillights, and when i put the back in, the reverse lights didnt work. In a seemingly unrelated problem, my gearshift indicator strip on the dash would only stay in park. The solution is that there is a sensor that measures gear shift position on the transmission, that relays the power to the reverse lights when reverse is selected. This sensor turned out to be corroded through and the wires surrounding it had corroded from the inside out. I recently got that replaced, and the problem was solved.

I have a 2001 vw passat. my parking lights went out. all the fuses are ok. i installed a new light switch in the dash but the lights still dont work. the turn signals, stop lights, head lights and reverse...

disconnect the reverse gear switch located at the gearbox. It's a two pin Connector with two wires, one of them is BROWN, and th other BROWN with BLUE stripe along. Make a short connection between those two wires, easiest way is to do it by usin simple paper clip. Turn the ignition IGN to ON position. and check the reverse lights. If Lights are on, than you need to replace the switch that you just disconnected as it's faulty.

Update me about your progress and we'll solve this easily.

Good luck

1998 chevy truck tail light an panel light popin fuse,s i checked all wiring in rear no damage to wiring bought an change 3 way bulb holder. still same prob, don,t no were to go next Keith

Somtimes the bulbs get a dead short in them even though they look OK. Install new bulbs or remove all bulbs on this circuit and reinstall one at a time to see if fuse pops. I had this problem with signal lights on 95 chevy 1500 and turned out the back up bulbs were on the same circuit. Bad back up bulb so once truck was in reverse it blew the fuse and then the signals did not work. Cheap enough to be worth a shot.
