Chevy was sent to dealership four times and problem persists! Once the fuel gauge gets slightly below half a tank. The gauge goes to empty and low fuel light blinks. Can go to fill tank, and of course it will only take about $20 to get back to full. I'm due for a new vehicle, but service also means a lot to me. If the dealership can't fix their own products, I'll be looking for dealers with a better record of service.
Hi,
sounds like the sending unit rheostat(sending unit) has a bad contact or break in the resistance wire. inside the tank theres a float attached to an arm that goes to a small rheostat, like a volume control on a stereo. the rheostat is sending a scratchy signal or no signal to the computer and your getting these readings. that part is inside the gas tank, the part usually comes integrated with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to be lowered to fix it.

there is only one pump in the fuel tank. the dealer was probably going to replace the pump since pump and sending unit is all one piece. it should fix your problem to replace this unit as you are probably getting false readings on your fuel gauge. you should be able to buy the pump and sending unit for about $250 and you have to drop the fuel tank to change it. or just realize that you gauge is off and do not run it out of gas. most cars are not completely accurate on the gauge as some fill way past the full mark and run out early and some will run a long ways reading empty

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.
SOURCE: gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on
This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

Need to replace the sensor inside the gas tank. I have a 2008 Malibu with the same problem. It was a faulty fuel gauge sensor.
