I'm having the same problem with my 2000 Denali. My four wheel drive transfer case chain stretched. I replaced it but I happened again. I just removed the chain and now driving in two wheel drive. The gears looked good so it may be the clutch plates or maybe position sensors. The solution maybe to just get a rebuilt transfer case.

Yes you can just replace the chain, I would not recommend it. Even if it is not obvious, the gears are also worn and have undergone all the stresses that stretched the chain, they may be ready to go soon, why take the chance, the engine has to be torn down to the same point to replace the chain as to replace the gears. I would replace all with a timing gear/chain set and install all new gaskets as it went back together. A timing gear failure could cost you a couple valves and/or pistons when it fails (piston on its way up with a valve stopped at full open when the gear broke).

Please take the time to rate this solution

If you replace just the chain, inspect the gears carefully for signs of run over (aka roll over) Look for signs of wear/distortion at the tips of the gears. If any damaged teeth are found, replace the gear as well. Any damage on the gear will only lead to corresponding damage to a new chain. When in doubt, swap it out.

4wd messed up in dodge 1500

inspect for worn components from output of transfer case to front diff input. If everything is tight and solid from those two points, everything else points to being transfercase internals. Make sure your actuator isn't faulty causing a "4x4 to 2x4 shift on/off"

I have a 98 dodge ram 1500 when i try to lock it in 4x4 it won't go, when i'm driving u can hear a loud clanking coming from the transfercase what does that mean

Bed news there is a chain in some of the Dodge transfer cases.
Chances are that it has stretched or broken.
Check some of the transfer case oil for metallic bits.
use a magnet near the drain plug to try and fish some out.
If you see metal pieces the chain is damaged.the chain is like a timing chain.

88 Jeep Wagoneer is stuck in 4WD and something bangs and slips.

The transfer case is a chain driven unit and if the chain wears and gets slack or if some other component related to the chain fails it will "slip" over the sprocket teeth under a load making a banging sound as the chain binds. Find a flat blacktop parking lot, while in 4WD and in drive idle the vehicle slowly (at about 5 MPH) straight ahead. No noise? Now trun the vehicle as sharp as you can either dirrection (you may have to give it a little throttle to maintian speed) Now is it making the banging noise? If so it more than likely is the transfer case. Small debris can lock the transfer case in 4WD also. Hope this helps.

4x4 transfercase chain slips under load.

It depends on what the stuff looked like . But yes a ten year old transfer case should have had all the wearing parts replaced. Maybe the whole case should have been replaced. But maybe it is adjusted wrong . Call anoyher garage to see if they can look at it.

1996 chev pu 1500 4wd acuator wired to stay on always.

Your best bet would be to take it to your local mechanic or yourself if you feel comfortable with it and first correctly rewire the actuator. If the chain still keeps slipping after this which it probably will you need a t-case rebuild.

My 4x4 in my k1500 chev 1/2 ton makes a bad grinding noise in 4x4

chain can't slip, but if noise is definitely in t case, there is either an engagement problem or some serious internal damage!
