Had 86 Taurus that would do that in very hot weather, finally had a tech that found bad ecm (engine control mosule).

They are two most common problems with this vehicle that will cause it to do this 1 bad distributor and the other bad MAIN relay. It's got all the symptoms of a leak in the fuel line. You may want to start backward at the tank and work your way all the way to the carb to find it but it would be surprising if it was something else. All the best.

I think your problem might be your fuel relay which is situated next to the fuse box in the engine compartment.
