If replacing the whole trans is best cost efficient solution. How hard or more costly is the conversion to a manual transmission. Have relatives that are skill mechanics that are very reasonable with labor charges

Front wheel drive tranny change is not easy or practical. Check the Torque converter lockup solenoid and the torque converter.

SOURCE: 2000 Elantra manual trans car won't crank

While the suggested resistance check of the clutch safety switch should catch a bad switch. However it may still be bad. I had the experience on my 2001 Elantra with the same problem happening intermittently. I checked and I had the delay check the switch and it looked okay. After three more trips and having them test other things including replacing the Starter motor under warranty they just replaced the switch. No more problem until 3 years later same thing started happening. I asked them to specifically check this and they just adjusted how far the switch button stuck out for teh clutch pedal to engage it under the dash. 4 days later it happened again. I said f it or something like that and went and bought the 15 dollar switch and put it in myself. I've not had a problem since then. But then I'm just coming up to the 3 yr anniversary of that switch.
You can also just bypass the switch and remember not to crank your starter without the clutch engaged unless you want to experience what whiplash is like firsthand.
Just change the switch.

SOURCE: elantra automatic trans problems

Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

SOURCE: check engine light is on in my 2005 Elantra newly maintenanced

Check your engine oil and break oil weather it is in below low level or full, if it has in low level get an engine oil for your car module and pour it. otherwise go to authorized Hyundai service centre and check for it.

2005 Dodge SXT. It won't shift up to the higher gears, it is not the turbo.

The turbo only crams more air into the cylinders for a bigger bang.

You need an auto electrician with a professional grade scan tool computer. It can read DTC trouble codes and historical data, but they are also bi-directional and can instruct transmission solenoids to operate and verify that they did. It sounds like you are in Limp Mode.

2000 4l60e. Why does it slip going to third gear and jumps to fourth in normal but in two mode shifts with no slipping?

The mileage is not mentioned. Wear and tear on the clutch pack can cause the symptoms that you describe. It is best if you take it to a transmission shop or get a whole remanufactured transmission.

2007 GP GXP. Tap shift works in 1st-3rd gears, but will not shift into 4th when using tap shift. Heads up shows 4th but trans stays in 3rd. Works normal when in auto mode.

Im assuming it is a 4 speed transmission and if you are using the "tap shift" which is for performance situations and you wouldnt typically need 4th gear. What speeds are you trying to go into 4th? If you are going too slow it wont upshot because you rpms might drop too low. Will it not go into 4th at highway speeds?

High rpms while driving

Also, your problem description is a bit confusing. If the engine rpms are too high, it could also be due to faulty auto transmission...the trans not shifting into higher gears. That is relatively complex diagnosis and fix that could quickly go beyond your capabilities. But if that is the issue, you could try changing the auto trans fluid. It may help, but if the auto trans has not been properly serviced over its life, it could be too far gone for this to help, but it is worth a try.

Driving on highway, droped out of O/D and stayed in 3rd. drove aprox 10 mi. and got off highway then would only shift to2nd and top out about 35mph tnen rpms rould climb?

First of all I assume this is an automatic with O.D. First check the transmission fluid level. If this has dropped to low, the transmission will not engage the higher gears. If this is not low, pull the transmission pan and replace or have replaced the trans filter. At this point, with the transmission pan pulled you should inspect the gears and clutches for damage. The pan will show sign of metal flakes, if not chunks of the gears or clutches in the bottom. This would be best handled by a professional and not be too costly. If this is the case then your problem is much bigger and will be much more costly. I hope this helps.

92 prelude si (auto)

With normal acceleration the 1st to second shift point should be around 2500-3000 rpm. Most of your shifts under moderate acceleration will take place at this same point or when there a light load on the transmission. Under hard acceleration the RPMs will climp higher due to increased power needs and the computer will shift when less power is needed or the RPMs climb to an unsafe speed say5000-6000rpms (depending on where yours redlines). Also going up a steep hill will raise the RPMs higher and goind down a hill will cause a faster shift at lower RPMs. These can always be altered by an individual owner by adjusting shift points, using performance parts and if you have problems (low tranny fluid/trans issues). Your trans RPMS are fine and will vary depening on how your foot accelerates. The shift pattern should be the same every time you drive slow/medium/fast/, look for changes in those patterns you will also catch a problem early.
