2001 Chevy Tracker 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic My 4 wheel drive stop working on my 2001 ZR2 chevrolet Tracker. It has a shifter on the floor and when it is put into 4 hi or 4 lo. the vehicle does not change from two wheel drive into 4. The 4x4 Dash light indicator stop coming on. What should I check? I lost 4x4 traction when driving in icy conditions.

there is a vacuum actuator under the battery tray. it is the most common cause for this issue. also the cable that goes from that actuator to the differential stretches sometimes causing it to engage and not engage depending on how bad it is.
if you have any more question please ask/

under battery is a vacum operated actuator that pulls your 4 wheel drive in to front axle.Make sure it has vacum going to it .Sometimes the actuator will get a hole in the rubber housing and 4 wheel will not engage. You could also check your vacum lines going to a canister on drivers side fender as sometimes the will come un-pluged and your actuator under battery will get novacum to it.If not it could be your actuator motor which is on the transfer case and is electric controlled and expencive300-400 dollars. Also could be a vacum line

Check the 4WD fuse and the illumination fuse in the I/P fuse block. Also check the Transfer Case Switch and the Front Axle Actuator for a fault. I would say that the Front Axle Actuator is the most common failure. I think there is even an updated actuator asy available. Check with you local chevy dealer for price and availability.
Testimonial: "I checked the fuse block first, there doesnt seem to be any "guts" where the fuse for the transfer switch is located."
