Usually does this when you first start car in the morning or could hear it after a few hours when the car has cooled down. The steering wheel is not fully turned when this sound occurs. Please help as I don't think vw will find the problem!!, many thanks , Irene
Check for loose steering rack /box check all ball joint ends . check that the suspension units are not loose when turning the wheel
Testimonial: "Thank you. Vw dealer said that they checked suspension etc and tightened everything??? Still does the knock. I noticed that I don't feel the knock in the steering wheel. Any other suggestions? It' still has warranty and I'm wondering whether to pay and get extra 2 years warranty? Another problem has appeared.. When I start car with cold engine it sometimes makes a loud crrrrr sound for maybe 4 seconds and then the sound stops. Any clues for this sound?"
Stay on the dealers back to fix the problem as they have an obligation to get it right. If they continue to fob you off writew directly to VW and complain that the dealer is not attending to your problem
I have a 2009 1.6 comfortline Polo sedan and it has the same front suspention knock when reversing out the drive way onto the road, have had all the rubbers and shocks replaced but still does it, as lately the EPC light on the dash is shinning permanently, have had the vehicle at 2 VW dealers but am unable to get it fixed ??
The engine gear box unit (power train) are mounted on a sub assemblythat is fitted up into the body during assembly. When reversing the reaction of the motor is opposit that to driving so check engine mount rubbers or the whole sub frame mounts and body bolts. Consider a professional opinion (legal) before buying extended warranty as in most cases any fault reported and acted upon during the warranty period is still considered under warranty even though the warranty period has lapsed. Push the issue right up to the VW engineers in the technical division as your car is not the only one with this problem

Eventhough the level is right, the fluid might need replacing (every 3~5 years and 50.000-100.000 miles).
