Sounds like you could be low on coolant in general, or your coolant is too watered down to be effective. Check your coolant mix with a hydrometer. Very inexpensive.

SOURCE: 1989 GMC K1500 5.7 with the radiator cap off you

Hello, I have a 1991 GMC Sierra, I did the same thing as you described and mine does the same thing. Speaking to a Mechanic about this I was told it is normal as long as it fluctuates and does not constantly flow out. If it constantly flows out then service will be needed to pump/radiator soon.

I had a water leak on my 1996 GMC K1500 and ran hot. Fixed problem truck running good, but the temperature gauge is pegged high even with a new sensor. How do I fix the gauge?

Pull off the negative battery cable and unplug the sensor. See if the gauge needle returns to normal. Try tapping on the cluster to unstick the needle. No luck? Replace the temperature gauge.

96 gmc suburban, a/c compressor stopped working but comes on every now and the..hook my gauges up and it read 23 on the low side and 150 hi side any clue??

sounds like low freon even though your gauges read different. i would try a can of freon and also check for alot of play in the front clutch on compressor just vibration on vehicle movement can cause the clutch pack to work.

2001 dodge stratus engine temperature gauge spikes occasionally

Look for a loose connection to the temperature sender unit on the motor.
If all connections OK, you may need a new temp sender unit.

Temp gauge on dash fluctuates up and down

There is an air pocket in the coolant (upper engine underneath the manifold). Some GM manifolds have a defective design that allows the coolant to leak from underneath the throttle body assembly inside the manifold. This can contaminate oil (check for caramel milkshake color on dipstick), and cause air pockets to form underneath the sensor---thus the erratic signal.
