Which is #6 coil 2000 Jag S 6cyl engine

2000S 6 cyl Jag S model. Occasional miss while engine idling. Diagnostic instrument shows ignition problem #6 cyl which is only cyl that has not had coil replaced. Which of the 3 coils easily accessed under head cover is #6? By phone 2 local shops said intake manifold has to come off, 2 1/2 hrs labor. Nearest Jag dealer, 3 hours away, confirmed that # 6 is one of the upper and easily accessed. I want to make sure the shop I take it to doesn't try to screw me.

With all due respect, Peter, you should work on your English before offering advise. Go to night school, get involved, and learn how to speak proper English.

SOURCE: How do I change the coils on a 2000 Jaguar S-type 4.0.

2000-2002 S-Types are horrible for this problem. Especially around 80,000 miles or more.
You are feeling a misfire(s). If no check engine light, then the computer can't determine exactly which cylinder is misfiring. Yes the coils are under the black covers on top of the cam(valve) covers. One per clyinder. I would recommend replacing all eight as the new coils are a newer design and if you just replace one now you will be replacing them one by one very soon. Make sure the tech inspects the cam(valve)cover seals for leaking, as they are bad to leak into the spark plug wells and cause same problem. Also change spark plugs as well at this time. Good luck!

Hi!!
The best way to find out coil problems is retrieving the TC's. If any of the coils is defective and misfire occurs, there should be a Trouble Code stored in the PCM memory. Have your vehicle's computer scanned for Trouble Codes, even if the Check Engine Light is NOT "ON". Many auto parts stores, like AutoZone and Checkers and Auto Repair Shops, offer this service for FREE, you'll get a print out of the codes and their meaning.
On the valve cover gasket issue, there may be small traces of oil somewhere along the valve cover, (heat will make the gasket shrink) but, most of the time, re-tightening the valve cover bolts will take care of it.
Good Luck!! Don't forget to rate this post!!

Replacement Spark Plugs Continually Misfiring for Cyl. #1

Locate the ignition coils - they are mounted on the ignition module. Remove the wide connector that goes to the module. You will have to unscrew it first. Spray some WD40 on the connector pins and try to scrub them with a tip of a small screwdriver. Be delicate not to brake or bend anything. Reconnect the connector. Start the engine and see if it still misses.
If it still does, try to touch/move each of the wires that go to the ignition module. BE VERY CAREFUL not to touch any of the moving parts of the engine as you have to do it with engine running.

If it still misses, do the following.
1. Engine off
2. Mark the ignition wires so that you reconnect them later in the same order
3. Locate the coil which gives spark for cyl 1
4. Switch locations of this coil with any of the two remaining coils
5. Reconnect the wires
6. Start the engine

If it now misses on another cylinder, you will have to buy a new coil.

Getting a intermittant misfire and an occasional srvc eng soon light sthe code says misfire cyl 1 but after i reset the light i goes back to intermittant missing

Check your ignition coils. If you don't have a coil for each plug then I'd bet thats going to be your problem. That or your spark plugs. I'd start with the coil that cylinder 1 runs through first though.

My 2000 cadillac catera check engine light is on and the tc light is on and it idle's low

What have you done so far. I would start with looking at the cars repair/maintenance history. Have the codes read (might be helpful). Could be anything, depending in what direction you need to go you might want to check for cyl. miss-fires, bad coil, IAC, fuel pressure, clogged CAT. CMP sensor. Let me know if I can help anymore.

If this is a truck with The coil on Plug setup, I would suggest replacing the #7 ignition coil and the plug.
