Engine missing mainly between 45 and 55 mph

I have a 97 4runner with the 4.3 litre. At first the engine started missing generally between 45 to 55 mph. After a couple of weeks it started missing throughout the whole rpm range, even at an idle. I changed the plugs and used contact grease of all connections. This solved the problem for about 800 miles. Now the engine is starting to miss between 45 and 55 mph again and I'm just waiting for it to turn back in to a full blown problem. Just not sure what it is. If it were a coil, timing, or wire problem wouldn't the issue be more of a constant?

I'm going to assume you have the 3.4 V6 engine which uses direct ignition with a coil on each plug.
Could be ignition or fuel related.
A weak spark/coil will allow the engine to run on all 6 cylinders at idle but miss under load, especially when going into overdrive at 45 mph. Not enough spark to jump the gap.
Same thing with low fuel pressure or dirty injectors. Not enough fuel when the engine is working hard.
Usually when you get a hard miss you will get a trouble code for the cylinder that is not giving power.
Have you changed the fuel filter in the past 12 months ?

SOURCE: engine idles rough, misses at 2500-3000 rpm's

i would first check the timing and if that does not fit i would take the cover back off and look at the belt for a bad or missing tooth

SOURCE: when the engine is not cold, it idles at below 400 rpm and stops

have the throttle body cleaned it is restricting air flow from having to much carbon in the intake yes and also it is time for plugs and wires.

SOURCE: Engine misses badly at freeway speed.

spark plugs? spark plug wires? coil? if it shuts off when hot, and starts when cold, coil could be problem....could be radiator stopped up causing it too heat, and will go off wait a few and it'll start back up...

Hi, my first recommendation would be to take the plugs out and visually inspect each one and check to make sure they are properly gapped, if they look fouled at all i would replace them without hesitation. try throwing a set of NGK plugs in the car to fix the misfires. other than that you may want to look at the wires. good luck joe

Could have many causes, but a good start could be to have the
oxygen sensor voltage output checked.(In exhaust system)
This would explain why mixture/ variable idle speed occurs.

Cracked the block in my boat. Question is, is there a difference between a merc 5 litre marine engine block and a ford 5 litre car engine

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2 BLOCKS IS THE MARINE BLOCK WOULD HAVE A HIGHER NICKEL CONTENT AND COULD POSSIBLE BE A 4 BOLT MAIN WHICH MAKES IT STRONGER.UNDER NORMAL USE CONDITIONS A CAR ENGINE WILL SURFICE

I do not have a manuel could someone tell me how much oil is required when changing a 2.2 engine.

Generally in the 5 to 6 litre (quarts) range. Put in 4 litres and check on dip stick. Add remainder half a litre at a time checking the dip each time. The volume of oil required to be added to go from "MIN" mark on the dip stick to "MAX" is just half a litre.

Do i need lock tool to change cam belt on a 03 grand vitara

I'd be first confirming whether you have a 1.6 litre Grand Vitara (petrol), or a 2 litre turbo diesel. The 2 litre petrol (straight 4 or V6) or 2.5 litre petrol engines are all chain drive.
If your engine is petrol then no lock tool is required (to hold the camshaft). Of course, there is a specific position that an engine should be rotated too before removing the belt from ANY engine.
If it's diesel, then although I'm unfamilar with that particular engine, the general requirement for diesel engines with high pressure injection pumps is "yes, you require a lock tool" to hold the injection pump pulley. As I think these are a common rail set-up, this requirement may not be necessary. Check with your Suzuki Dealer, or maybe someone else here will know more. A similar question may have already been asked and answered here too.
