2005 lincoln ls ruff cold start then smooths out

After it warms up it is fine but at start up runs real ruff I have chaged the plugs and coil packs due to the check engine light code

    The preheater is the problem! And yes, the preheater can be changed.

Check out the preheater for the choke circuit. It closes the choke to give a rich mixture at cold start.

does the security light flash rapidly? if so there is a relay for the pcm (12.00) that could be bad refer to owners maual for exact location.

Driver side valve cover
7mm socket to remove coil covers and coil

1 thru 4 pass side
5 thru 8 drivers side
Front to back

Yea , take it to a qualified repair shop that has a scan tool that can show misfire data . That's the best way . What engine ? 3.0 L or 3.9 L . Both have COP - coil on plug ignition system . I have replaced a bunch of these coil's an spark plugs . The spark plug get so worn the spark can't jump the gap an fries the coil and if it goes like that long enough it will short out the driver (transistor) in the PCM engine computer . The last one i worked on cost the owner over 2 grand. New computer , programming , new coils , plugs , plus my labor .

My 03 Lincoln LS started idling rough only in the mornings when first started. Rest of the day it starts and runs smooth.

Sounds like it might be leaking intake manifold gaskets. They leak when cold but as the engine warms up they swell and seal up. This is common with rubber intake manifold gaskets.

Sounds to me like you've got a stuck door. One of the doors in the air ducts isn't closing/opening all the way. Possibly stuck or possibly a vacuum leak or disconnected/broken vacuum hose. Only way to know is to pull the dash apart. Sucks but gotta be done.

How do I replace a coil for 2005 lincoln ls

You have 8 coil pack's, to remove undo coil harness then remove small 8 mm bolt slide coil pack out and replace with new one, if replace all do same with all, you will have to work it around fuel rail, but I have never heard of all coil pack's going bad.

A couple of things worth checking out:
  1. If it only hesitates and stalls when its cold and smooths out when its warm, I'd check the MAP sensor and TPS
  2. If it's sluggish all the time and stalling, it's very possibly the catalytic converter
