GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR LIGHT 2006 FORD EXPLORER

Remove the PRNDL trim ring.
Remove the upper console panel.
Slide the lower shift knob bezel downward.

1. Remove the bolt and lift up on the shift knob to remove.

Remove the lower shift knob bezel.
Disconnect the light bulb from the PRNDL bezel. an replace .

Don't think you need take shifter knob off . Just PRNDL trim plate an upper console plate . They should just pull up , use plastic trim tool to get it so you can get your fingers under an pull up carefully .

Sounds like you need a transmission service....

I am assuming that your shift lever is on the steering column. Either the bulb for indicator has burned out or the shift indicator switch on the transmission has failed. There are 3 different engine options for this truck and 3 different transmissions. I would need to know which engine and transmission your truck has, to give better info. FYI, you have to remove the instrument cluster to replace the bulb, assuming that is the problem.

The neutral tow kit is nothing more than a LED to indicate that the transfer case is in neutral. I installed my own LED and had the dealership download the program. This is for 2001 - 2005. The tow indicator light plugs into the small green connector under the steering wheel. I cut the connector off and installed straight line wire connectors and hooked it up to the LED. I had the dealer confirm that following the sequence of steps the transfer case was in neutral. Make sure the vehicle is secured (won't roll away)
1. have the engine running
2. put the shift level into neutral
3. turn the key back one position (off but not locked)
4. indicator light wil come on and then turn off
5. press the brake and the 4X4 auto button for about 5 seconds
6. the indicator light will flash 4 times and then stay on
7. release the brake and the 4X4 button
8. transfer case is in neutral

I would check the wiring at the plug going into the brake light switch at the pedal.If there is a bad contact there it won't shift out of park and also you'll be having an intermittent brake light problem you aren't aware of while you're driving.

check to make sure you have brake lights when trying to shift if not check the brake lamp switch if it is ok you might need a shift interlock solenoid

this could mean there is a problem with the transmission,but most times when OD light is flashing it is because the wiring to the OD switch is broken.
is the OD switch on the end of the gear shift lever ?
or does your vehicle have the shifter on console between seats ?
