I have a 2005 Yukon and the speedometer sticks and most time remain on 0. I called them back starting in 2006 to advice of the problem and they just told me it was a problem with the 2003 and 2004. They offered to pay half of the cost to fix it and I refused. I was like how crazy is it to have a 2005 car and the speedometer not working in 2006. I call them like once a month complaining. I refuse to pay money to fix the car. I wish I never got the Yukon. My dream car for years and look what I got a true lemon. I have a 2005 Yukon and the speedometer sticks and most time remain on 0. Do you have after market tires that are larger than stock ? This will affect your speedometer.Another thing could be the speedometer gear which is easy and cheap. Its at the end of your speedometer cable inside of transfer case.
It could be the cluster but I would look at the speed sensor first. It is located on the transmission. You should get a Haynes manual on your vehicle from the local auto parts store before going into the job.
You can check the speed sensor on the transmission. Tap the cluster to see if it will reset. If not remove and unplug the cluster if the guage stays its just stuck if it falls when you unplug it you might have a short somewhere.if it does stay you can take the plastic housing apart and try to reset it by hand.
This is really common on the 03-06 Yukon instrument clusters. It's caused by failing stepper motors on the circuit board and can be repaired. Check out this page for more about it and how to get it fixed - Yukon instrument cluster repair
It is possible that the battery was the problem due to low voltage. I would keep an eye on the problem and make notes on any conditions if the problem reoccurs. The speedometer head or connections etc. could be a cause, but since problem seems fine now all you can do is watch to see if it happens again. Unfortunatly when a problem is not happening it is very hard to repair or find why it happened. That is why any info on when or how would be helpful even though it may not seem so.
It is probable that the cable for the speedometer is streached and your MPH reading is incorrect all or most of the time, get a friend to drive behind you at say 55 MPH so you will know the odometer reading ( may prevent speeding ticket )
All metal expands when heated and contracts as it cools. Your cable becomes slack when hot. Stay Safe!
The 04-05 GM truck have a special policy for the speedos. if you have less than i think 70k, your local dealer should replace if for free. Double check this. If not you will have to pay for a new cluster, it runs about 450 or so.
I have not heard of this before but I do know there is such a wide spread problem with the cluster (speedo) GM has extended warranty on several years and I expect they will add more years as time goes by.
Many of the problems I encounter have been speedo's showing a faster speed than actual, 100mph plus.
Typically on a Yukon instrument cluster this is caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board, it can be fixed though. Check out this page for more about Yukon speedometer problems and how to get it fixed - Yukon speedometer fix
