Question about 2003 Infiniti FX35
My 2003 Infiniti FX 35 seems to only burn oil on start up...I have followed the vehichle and can't notice any Blue smoke whatsoever during moderate or even extreme acceleration. However when it sits overnight it smokes terribly on start up for about 1 minute or so. I cant imagine how oil appears to be entering into the Number one combustion chamber when shut off, but not when running under even extreme acceleration. I have confirmed the number one cylinder since it is the only spark plug continuing to foul out from deposits, while the other 5 all burn light tan as expected.....The dealer is saying the valve seals are the issue. It seems odd that a defective seal would not allow oil to pass while the engine is hot and operatiing while being fully lubricated but somehow allows oil to seap past an elevated valve stem mount in the head while shut down. The car uses about 1/2 -1 QT per week with only being run 100 miles or so... the amazing thing is I can drive the car 300 miles on a trip and not be low even a fraction of oil as long as I fill it before beginning the trip. So clearly the seals are functioning duirng operation..Thanks for any insight you may have.. Doug Robison
The dealer is right its a valve stem seal, when it sets valve not moving oil when hot will seap down thru valve seal into combustion chamber hense oil smoke when you start it up. its burning oil when your going down the road you just cannot see it because its such a mynute amount, because oil is moving and dosent get a chance to run into cyl. like it does when its setting, but its burning it. if its fouling a plug its bad and may be more than just a valve like maybe oil ring on piston. i got 40+ years of experance working on autos and trucks and if its using that much oil in just 100 mi. you got to be seeing something.
