I think I'm having a problem shifting into overdrive. Lately, the RPMs seem to be much higher when travelling over about 80kph, and it also seems to sometimes shift from 1st to about 3rd, losing power, but then around 80kph+ it sounds like it should be shifting into overdrive, but isn't. I'm concerned that I'll burn out my motor or transmission if I attempt to do some highway driving for a few hours. I've also noticed the poorer gas mileage as well. I'm wondering how to fix this...as Ive read about possible Shift Solenoid or something or other problems... Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did check the fluid levels, and it was a bit low, so I added more of the proper atf fluid to it, as well as some leak stopper type thing just in case... There doesn't seem to be any really harsh shifting or grinding or anything, just as I mentioned the loos of power sometimes between 1st and 3rd (This is an automatic transmission I should add) - So I'm just assuming it's around those gears... Thats all I can really think of so far. Has been happening for about 3 months now I think, and have not been travelling at speeds greater than around 80-90 in fear of damaging something...and can't take long trips (Or could I?) Thx again
The Internet, though, has a large number of web sites where
you can buy service manuals and schematics from bookstores,
publishers, and other collectors. Here is just a sampling of

get the truck where you can service it and have a transmission service done this will include: new fluid and transmission filter
because it sounds as if it has not been changed in awhile open the hood and if the transmission fluid smells cooked change it right away

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid flush and replaced the transmission filter?

I agree with the shift solenoid being the problem.

Sounds like you need to cover basics first. The battery cables are clean and tight? Are all the wires in the battery cable at the battery making a good connection? Sounds like a common problem and is in the service bullitins is that the ground wire attached to the battery cable end that goes to the body and then to the transmission case bolt has failed to provide a good ground and the acuators and servos and even the switches have'nt a good path to ground ( their is one but it's though other controllers and the power isn't strongly grounded. I f you were following a dianostic tree of good and bad the ground is the number one cause of your problem. Don't fix the old grounds just add new ones. and then clear codes and test it again. Oil leaks near the transmission to engine connection were found by me everytime that I was assigned to this set of problems. Ground corrected and the car was fixed.
SOURCE: E40d trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear, only rev. 1+2
check or replace your thottle position sensor tps that trans needs to know where the throttle is to shift if it is bad it will do as you say wont shift to third
another telltale is it will act like it goes into lockup when shifting into reverse and stall the engine
