Fuel pressure regulator makes hissing sound

Hi. WHen I turn my ignition switch on, without starting the engine, should the fuel pump pressurize and shut off, or continue to run making a hissing sound. it also makes this sound when being driven. Seems like fuel pressure regulator making the noise. Car just quit on me while idleing, burned out starter.

I don't think the solution is correct in saying the pump shuts off. Unless the pressure switch is in the pump itself, it seems like the fuel bypasses through the regulator, as the regulator is controlled by vaccuum, it is not able to turn off the pump. I have replaced the regulator resulting in much better performance, but the pump still runs with the key on/engine off.

no noise in pump or anywhere just low fuel pressure.

The fuel pump should prime for second or two when turning the ignition on. Then the fuel pump should run when the engine is cranked when the ecu detects a signal from the crank sensor. If the fuel pump runs all the time make sure the relay has not been bypassed with a piece of wire. If its been bypassed it leaves the car in a dangerous condition. In the event of an accident and a fuel line is ruptured the fuel pump will run continually with a huge risk of a fuel fire.

Your fuel pump should cycle on until the proper fuel pressure is achieved then it should shut off

in my experience with the many vehicles Ive encountered the pump shuts off if your engine is not running when the system reaches pressure. if the engine is running the pump will run continuously. An easy way to find this out try it on some friends vehicles. I have dealt with mostly north american vehicles however so i suppose your vw could be different but as i said all of the vehicles i have worked on work in the fashion i described earlier

no noise the fuel pressure is just low fuel pressure

2004 Buick Century Custom starting issues

Sounds like the fuel pump is bleeding down when it sits, the fuel pressure regulator could be leaking into the engine or if the engine misses when it first starts it could be a leaking injector. Do this, check the test port for pressure with the key on engine off if there's pressure cycle the switch again and then let it sit for 5 minutes then recheck and if there's no pressure disconnect and plug the fuel line going into the fuel rail or regulator then cycle the switch again and if it still loses pressure and there are no visible external leaks it's the fuel pump.

1997 chev truck with vortex 454 if it sits for a while it will start just fine. if I stop the engine it will not restart unless I pump the throttle

This sounds like a leaking fuel pressure regulator so as soon as you turn the engine off the fuel leaks into the intake and floods the engine, locate the fuel pressure regulator and remove the vacuum hose then cycle the ignition switch to run the fuel pump and watch the regulator nipple for fuel. I hope this helps. Take care.

I have a 2005 Pontiac that makes a hissing noise underneath the car. you can turn the car ignition on without fully starting car and it still makes hissing noise then stops.HELP!!!!!

There is a distinct sound that has a hissing component when you first turn on the key. It will last a second or two when the key is turned to the run position. When the engine started the sound will return and continue to produce the noise so long as the engine is running.

A relatively low noise is normal. If you are concerned check other like cars for the loudness level.

how to check your fuel pump

The pressure regulator on the fuel rail can also produce a sound when the fuel pump is running. The regulator is under the hood and any reasonable noise would not be a concern, A clicking sound is also normal throughout the fuel system when the engine is running created by the fuel injectors cycling.

Do you hear the fuel pump switch on when the ignition is turned on by listening at the fuel pump with ignition on you should hear a hissing sound for a few moments and then once the fuel pressure is reached the pump will stop. If not check the electrics and fuses.

WHY DO I HAVE TO POUR WATER ON MY FUEL RAIL AFTER IT IS HOT SO THE ENGINE WILL START

Hi James,

That is a real good question. Have you checked the fuel pressure on the fuel rail to see how much pressure there is when it refuses to start? It sounds like you may be losing your fuel pressure because of the fuel returning to the tank when the engine is hot. This could be due to a faulty fuel pump assembly or a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

Try this: When it doesn't start, turn the key OFF and wait about 15 seconds, then turn it back to the ON position (do not try to start yet). Repeat this a second time, only this time turn the switch to the START position. If the engine starts, then it is definitle due to loss of fuel pressure in the fuel rail. You will then need to test your fuel pressure with a gauge and plug off the return line to determine if the problem is being caused by the regulator or the pump.

92 ford aerostar good fuel pressure, plenty of spark, spins like crazy good battery , air intake good but fuel pump runs non stop and engine want start. acts like no run signal being enabled. is there a...

There is a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. It could be bad. To check this pull off the vacuum line and turn the ignition on without trying to start the car. If fuel comes out of the vacuum hose fitting the fuel pressure regulator is bad. Another possibility is a bad fuel pump. Check your fuel preasure. If low or non exisitant replace fuel pump only after checking fuel pressure regulator. Good luck.

sounds like clogged or clogging fuel injectors, sorry for delay in the answer in your problem, been busy w/other issue . suggest easy solution to your problem, purchase lucas fuel injector cleaner, add to your fuel tank. cost $5.00 treats 20 gallons of fuel. just add the ammount that you need. follow the directions on the bottle, you can purchase at auto zone or advance automotive if need be to clear up the sputtering problem. note' there will always be hissing from the gas cap[normal] due to pressure from your fuel pump,it pumps around 180lbs of pressure to the fuel rail that operates your engine the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail;regulates the pressure to your injectors, that's what makes your engine run so smoothly.

I suspect fuel pump problem how do I check fuel pressure, what tools do I need

There should be a Schrader valve on the fuel rail (looks like a valve stem on a tire, it is metal).

You need to connect a fuel pressure gauge to that valve and do the following test:

  1. Relieve fuel pressure.
  2. Remove the 12 mm sealing nut from the fuel rail. Attach the fuel pressure adapter nut, 12 mm (90201 - P0A - 003) and the special tool.
  3. Start the engine. Measure the fuel pressure with the engine idling and the vacuum hose of the fuel pressure regulator disconnected from the fuel pressure regulator and pinched. If the engine will not start, turn the ignition switch on, wait for two seconds, turn it off, then back on again and read the fuel pressure. Pressure should be: 260 - 310 kPa (2.7 - 3.2 kgf/sq.cm, 38 - 48 psi)
  4. Reconnect vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. Pressure should be: 210 - 250 kPa (2.1 - 2.8 kgf/sq.cm, 30 - 37 psi) If the fuel pressure is not as specified, first check the fuel pump. If the fuel pump is OK, check the following:
    • If the fuel pressure is higher than specified, inspect for:
    • Pinched or clogged fuel return hose or line.
    • Faulty fuel pressure regulator.
    • If the fuel pressure is lower than specified, inspect for:
    • Clogged fuel filter.
    • Faulty fuel pressure regulator.
    • Fuel line leakage.
