Water pump removal on a 1996 Buick Riviera (supercharged)

What is the trick to removing the water pump? The pulley for the power steering pump blocks the extraction of one (the last) bolt. Do you have to remove the power steering pump pulley? Does it take a puller?

well i cannot verify that you have to take power steering pulley off , that is not in the procedure in 2 manuals , for the supercharged and non supercharged 3.8 engines . i suspect the power steering pulley has a couple of holes in the front for the P/S pump bolts to go thru , is it possible you could sneak that last bolt thru 1 of those holes , if not i would suggest if that pulley is in your way , the pump mounting bolts will be accessed thru pulley access holes , undo the pump bolts , think they are 13mm , just scoot it over enough to complete your mission , by the way labor guide allows 2.7 hours for that water pump job .

There are two bolts that hold the power steering pump in place that are accesable through the holes in the pulley. If you use a 6" extension and a 1/2" socket you can reach them. this will allow the pump to be removed and hang by the hoses and be out of the way. I was told also to inspect the cam sensor while it is apart because you have to remove the water pump in order to get to it.

Changing water pump and powersteering pulley is in the way of one bolt. how do i get the pully off

YOU NEED A PULLEY PULLER TO PRESS THE PULLEY OFF. I NORMALLY JUST UNBOLT THE POWER STEERING PUMP ITS EASIER. THERE ARE 3 10MM BOLTS THAT HOLD IT ON.

No you don`t have to remove the supercharger drive shaft assembly. The only thing you might have to support the engine and remove the motor mount on the right side.So you have the clearance to remove the pump.Hope this helps.Good luck.

How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 buick riviera

Place Jack under engine with wood to hold it up. Remove uper engine mount(leave loose in engine compartment. Loosen pulley bolts. Remove belts. Remove alternator bolts and lift out of the way for easy access to power steering bolts. Remove 2 power steering bolts using access holes in pulley. You should be able to accessall of the water pump bolts now by moving things out of the way as you go. The two larger bolts toward the radiator can be accessed through the two holes in the motor mount ( you will need a short socket on a 1/4" drive rachet). You should be able to get the pump off now. Installation is much easier than removal.

How to replace accessory serpentine belt on 1996 Riviera

The supercharged 3800 engine uses two accessory drive belts. The outer belt drives the supercharger. The inner belt drives the generator, power steering pump, coolant pump and air conditioning compressor. All driven accessories are rigidly mounted to the engine. Drive belt tension is maintained by the spring loaded belt tensioner. Each belt has its own tensioner.
Remove: Place a jack with a block of wood on it under oil pan to support engine. Caution : Be sure the wood block extends past the width of the oil pan to avoid damage.
Torque axis engine mount bolt where it connects the mount to the engine mounting bracket.
Electrical connector from crank sensor.
Engine mounting bracket lower stud and lower engine to allow stud to clear frame rail.
Raise engine and reinstall bolt into torque axis mount. Lower engine to allow spacer to be removed.
Belt(s)

Istalling: Belt.
Spacer. Remove bolt from torque axis bracket and lower engine.
Electrical connector to crank sensor.
Mounting bracket stud.
Raise engine and install torque axis mount bolt.
Tighten bolt to 87 Nm (52 lb. ft.)

Good luck and hope this helps.
