HOW TO DISABLE THE SRS [ AIR BAG]

Here is the procedure to check the gage connector on the back of the instrument cluster. The procedure is a lot longer if you have a mechanical PRNDL indicator in the cluster. I'm thinking you don't. You don't need to remove the cluster as the procedure says, because you're just going to check the connectors on the back. You just need to take the screws out and tilt it forward far enough to reach in and push the connectors in.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   

CAUTION The models covered by this guide are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which utilizes a driver and passenger side air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described earlier in this section.

1. Disable the air bag system.
2. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, perform the following;
   1. Remove the lower steering column cover.
   2. Remove the knee blocker reinforcement panel from under the steering column.

Remove the indicator cable loop.

1. 1. Remove the clip securing the gear shift cable end to the gear selector adapter.
   2. Pull the cable end from the gear selector.
   
   
2. Remove the instrument cluster bezel.
3. Remove the mounting screws securing the instrument cluster to the instrument panel.
4. Rotate the top of the cluster outward.
5. Disengage the wiring harness connectors from behind the cluster assembly.
6. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, carefully guide the range indicator cable and guide tube through the opening to avoid any possible damage.

To install:

1. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, verify the free travel of the range indicator cable from P to 1 by gently pulling on the cable, then relaxing the cable. Do NOT snap the cable once it is pulled.
2. Position the instrument cluster assembly into the instrument panel by leading the bottom of the cluster in first, plug in the wiring harness connector(s), and rotate upward. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, route the indicator cable and guide tube through the opening in the instrument panel.

1. Install and tighten the instrument cluster mounting screws.
2. Install the instrument cluster bezel.
3. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, install the indicator cable and guide tube. Install the cable retaining clips.
4. Install the knee blocker reinforcement panel.
5. Install the lower steering column cover.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.

jack front of car up then turn steering wheel full lock to full lock and count the number of turns from either side then divide by 2 so you have the straight ahead position then remove the steering wheel and replace in the straight ahead position ,iam saying this because the vehicle may have been re tracked and only one track rod end adjusted so you have say 2 turns to the left and 2 and half to the right if you follow me .or remove the steering wheel then just hold it on and slowly drive forewards and lift wheel and refit to the correct position

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering

Depowering Procedure

WARNING: Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental

restraint system (SF3) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce

the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Never probe the connectors on the airbag module. Doing so can result in

air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.

WARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury, do not use any memory saver

devices.

NOTE: Ifa seat equipped with a seat mounted side airbag and or a safety belt

pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the supplemental restraint system

(SES) must be depowered.

NOTE: The air bag warning lamp illuminates when the RCM fuse is removed and the

ignition switch is ON. This is normal operation and does not indicate a supplemental

restraint system (SRS) fault.

NOTE: The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle

to the customer

1. Turn all vehicle accessories OFF.

2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

3. At the central junction box (Cm), located below the LH side of the instrument panel,

remove the cover and the restraints control module (RCM) fuse F223 (lOA) from

the CTh. For additional information, refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual.

4. Turn the ignition ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator for at least 30

seconds. The air bag indicator will remain lit continuously (no flashing) if the correct

ROsI fuse has been removed, If the air bag indicator does not remain lit

continuously, remove the correct RCM fuse before proceeding

5. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

6. WARNING: To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the

backup power supply must be depleted before repairing or replacing any front or

side air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) components and before set-ricing,

replacing, adjusting or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors,

such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats and hood

latches.

To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable

and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power

supplies (if equipped).

Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

Repoweri.ng Procedure

1. WARNING: The restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service

only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in

injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tool(s) that may have been installed during

the repair have been removed from the vehicle and all SRS components are

connected.

2. Turn the ignition switch from OFF to ON.

3. Install the ROsI fuse F2.23 (lOA) to the DB and install the cover.

4. WARNING: Be sure that nobody is in the vehicle and that there is nothing

blocking or set in front of any air bag module when the battery ground cable is

connected.

Connect the battery ground cable.

5. Prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS) as follows:

Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back to

ON and visually monitor the air bag indicator with the air bag modules installed. The

air bag indicator will light continuously for approximately six seconds and then turn

off. If an air bag supplemental restraint system (SF3) fault is present, the air bag

indicator will:

- failto light.

- remain lit continuously.

- flash.

The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch

has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the

restraints control module (RCM) to complete the testing of the SRS. if the air bag

indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5

sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault discovered

must be diagnosed and repaired.

Look at fig. 4 for the heater a/c dash control: HEATER CORE Altima REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1. Position the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
3. Disconnect the negative (() battery cable; then, the positive (+) battery cable. NOTE: Wait for a least 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery cables for the charge in the air bag circuit to dissipate before working on the air bag module(s).
   
4. Remove the driver's side SRS and steering wheel by removing or disconnecting the following:
   • Lower lid from the steering wheel and disconnect the driver's air bag module connector
   • Left and right side lids from the steering wheel
   • Special bolts from both side of the steering wheel using a tamper resistant Torx wrench (T50)
   • Air bag module and store it face up
   • Horn's electrical connector and remove the steering wheel nut
   • Steering wheel from the steering column using a suitable puller
5. Remove the passenger's side SRS by removing or disconnecting the following:
   • Glove box door and the glove box
   • Front passenger's air bag module connector
   • 2 special bolts using a tamper resistant Torx wrench (T50)
   • 4 passenger's air bag-to-instrument panel nuts
   • Front passenger's air bag module and store it face up.
6. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
7. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
8. Working in the engine compartment, disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes.
9. Remove the instrument panel by removing or disconnecting the following:
   • Kick plate and dash side finisher on the driver's side
   • 2 lower panel-to-instrument panel screws and the lower panel on the driver's side
   • 2 lower reinforcement panel-to-instrument panel screws and the lower reinforcement panel
   • 6 steering column cover screws, the covers, the spiral cable and combination switch
   • 2 cluster lid "A" screws and the cluster lid "A"
   • 3 combination meter screws, disconnect the electrical harness connector and remove the combination meter
   • Switch panel
   • Instrument panel lower covers
   • Snap out the transmission shifter finisher (boot)
   • 4 cluster lid "C" screws and the cluster lid "C"
   • 4 audio and deck pocket-to-instrument panel screws and the audio and deck pocket
   • 5 center console screws and the center console
   • 2 center instrument panel screws and the center panel
   • front defroster grilles
   • Front pillar garnish
   • Instrument panel 3 nuts/4 screws and the instrument panel
   • 8 instrument stay assembly nuts and the stay
   • Steering member assembly 5 nuts/1 bolt and the steering member
10. Remove the air conditioning housing assembly by removing or disconnecting the following:
    • Refrigerant lines from the air conditioning housing assembly
    • Thermo control amp
    • Air conditioning housing assembly
11. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Heater unit

12. Install or connect the following:
    • Heater core to the heater unit
    • Heater unit
13. Install the air conditioning housing assembly by installing or connecting the following:
    • Air conditioning housing assembly
    • Thermo control amp
    • Refrigerant lines to the air conditioning housing assembly
14. Install the instrument panel by installing or connecting the following:
    • Steering member assembly and the steering member 5 nuts/1 bolt
    • Instrument stay assembly and the 8 stay nuts
    • Instrument panel and the instrument panel 3 nuts/4 screws
    • Front pillar garnish
    • Front defroster grilles
    • Center instrument panel and the 2 center panel screws
    • Center console and the 5 center console screws
    • Audio and deck pocket and the 4 audio and deck pocket-to-instrument panel screws
    • Cluster lid "C" and the 4 cluster lid "C" screws
    • Snap in the transmission shifter finisher (boot)
    • Instrument panel lower covers
    • Switch panel
    • Combination meter, connect the electrical harness connector and install the 3 combination meter screws
    • Cluster lid "A" and the 2 cluster lid "A" screw
    • Combination switch, the spiral cable, the covers and the 6 steering column cover screws
    • Lower reinforcement panel and the 2 lower reinforcement panel-to-instrument panel screws
    • Lower panel and the 2 lower panel-to-instrument panel screws, on the driver's side
    • Kick plate and dash side finisher, on the driver's side
15. Working in the engine compartment, connect the heater hoses to the heater core tubes.
16. Install the passenger's side SRS by installing or connecting the following:
    • Front passenger's air bag module
    • 4 passenger's air bag-to-instrument panel nuts
    • 2 new special bolts and torque using a tamper resistant Torx wrench (T50) to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm)
    • Front passenger's air bag module connector
    • Glove box door and the glove box
17. Install the driver's side SRS and steering wheel by installing or connecting the following:
    • Steering wheel to the steering column
    • Steering wheel nut and torque the nut to 22-29 ft. lbs.
    • Horn's electrical connector
    • Air bag module
    • New special bolts to both sides of the steering wheel and torque the bolts using a tamper resistant Torx wrench (T50) to 11-18 ft. lbs. (15-25 Nm).
    • Both the left and right side lids to the steering wheel
    • Lower lid to the steering wheel and connect the driver's air bag module connector
18. Refill the cooling system.
19. Connect the positive (+) battery cable; then, the negative (() battery cable.
20. Evacuate, charge and leak test the air conditioning system refrigerant.
21. Operate the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

Removal & Installation-of dashboard which includes removing radio.


CAUTION Many BMW models covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, properly disable the SRS.
The instrument panel removal is complex and requires disconnecting many components. Make sure to label and organize the components as they are disconnected, disassembled or removed.
3 Series Models

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), wait for a period of 11 minutes before proceeding.
2. If equipped, disable and remove the SRS components as necessary.
3. Remove center console as outlined in this section.
4. Remove the glove box compartment as follows:
   1. Open the glove box door and remove glove compartment mounting screws.
   2. Pull glove box compartment outward, and disconnect the electrical connectors as necessary.
   
   
5. Remove lower left dash trim piece as follows:
   1. Remove the lower dash panel mounting screws.
   2. Pull the lower dash panel to the left and back and disengage it from the driver's side footwell retaining clips.
   
   
6. If equipped, remove the driver's side and passenger airbags.

CAUTION Make sure to store the airbags properly in a safe area.

1. Remove steering wheel.
2. Remove driver side knee bolster fasteners and remove.
3. Remove the following components:
   
   Instrument cluster Headlight switch Radio Climate control head and module.
   
4. Remove the turn signal and windshield wiper/washer stalk switches as outlined in Section 8.
5. Remove windshield (A-pillar) trim from both left and right sides.
6. Remove the reinforcement bar below the steering column, then remove steering column shear bolts. Carefully lower steering lightly and support the column to avoid damaging the spindles.

WARNING Lowering the steering column too far can damage the spindles.

1. Remove the glove compartment support frame fasteners, then remove the frame assembly.
2. Carefully release and lift out the defroster outlets (both left and right sides) at base of windshield. Remove the screws located below the outlets.
3. Remove the mounting bolts on the left and right sides of the dash board assembly.
4. Carefully lift the instrument trim panel off slowly. Make sure all harness connectors and wiring are disconnected.
5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Z3 Models

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait for a period of 11 minutes before proceeding.
2. Disable and remove the (SRS) components as necessary.
3. Remove center console as outlined in this section.

CAUTION Make sure to store the airbags properly in a safe area.

1. Remove steering wheel.
2. Remove driver side knee bolster fasteners and remove.
3. Remove the following components:
   
   Instrument cluster Headlight switch Radio Climate control head and module.
   
4. Remove the turn signal and windshield wiper/washer stalk switches as outlined in Section 8.
5. Open the glove box, remove the four finishing caps near the glove box door lock catch and remove the screws.
6. Remove the trim caps and screws from the far right end of dash and next to the center air vents on right side of the center console.
7. Close the glove box, then pull it downward and out slightly.
8. Remove the two screws securing the glove box cover and remove the cover.
9. Remove the two fasteners securing the passenger side air bag bracket-to-support brace.
10. Remove the two mounting fasteners on each end of instrument panel, in the door jamb areas.
11. Remove the two mounting fasteners located under center air vents.
12. Remove screw trim caps at the base of windshield and remove the screws.
13. Carefully lift the instrument panel up and remove it from the passenger (right) side of the vehicle.
14. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds for models equipped with an air bag.

1. Remove the fuse box cover from under the left side of the instrument panel.
2. Remove the heater control knobs.
3. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry off the heater control panel.

To install:

1. Connect the speedometer cable and harnesses.
2. Position the combination meter and secure into the dash.
3. Install the cluster finish panel.
4. Install the heater control panel with the control knobs.
5. Install the fuse box cover if removed.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the radio/HVAC control module bezel. CAUTION
   The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses air bags. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, air bag modules, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described earlier in this section.
   
3. Remove the right instrument panel side trim.
4. Remove the two retaining screws at the lower right side support beam.
5. Remove the instrument panel support bolt at the A-pillar.
6. Remove the left instrument panel side trim and upper instrument panel bezel.
7. Remove the lower knee bolster and console screws at the instrument panel.
8. Remove the gearshift knob and shifter bezel.
9. Remove the mounting screws at the front and rear of the floor console. Remove the front and rear console halves.
10. Remove the right side instrument panel support strut.
11. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container, then disconnect the heater hoses at the cowl panel. Plug the heater core outlets to prevent coolant from spilling during unit housing removal.
12. Remove the mounting screws and heater core cover.
13. Remove the heater core from the vehicle. To install:
    
14. Carefully position the heater core unit into the heater housing.
15. Install the heater core cover onto the heater housing and tighten the mounting screws.
16. Install the right side instrument panel support strut.
17. Install the front and rear console halves.
18. Install the shifter bezel and gearshift knob.
19. Install the lower knee bolster and console screws at the instrument panel.
20. Install the upper instrument panel bezel and left instrument panel side trim.
21. Install the instrument panel support bolt at the A-pillar.
22. Install the two retaining screws at the lower right side support beam.
23. Install the right instrument panel side trim.
24. Install the radio/HVAC control module bezel.
25. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
26. Connect the negative battery cable.

2000-02 Frontier And Xterra

1. Disconnect both the negative (1st) and positive (2nd) battery cables.
2. Remove the steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
   1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

CAUTION Wait 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery cables and turning the ignition switch to the OFF position before servicing the air bag system.

1. Remove the lower lid and disconnect the driver-s air bag module connector.
2. Remove both side lids.
3. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® Wrench size T50, remove the special bolts from both sides of the steering wheel and discard them.
   
4. Remove the SRS module from the steering wheel.

CAUTION Always store the SRS module face up.

1. Position the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
2. Disconnect the horn connector and remove the steering wheel nut.
3. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.

1. Remove the passenger-s side air bag by disconnecting or removing the following items:
   1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

CAUTION Wait 3 minutes after disconnecting the battery cables and turning the ignition switch to the OFF position before servicing the air bag system.

1. Open the glove box door.
2. Working inside the glove box, open the lower instrument panel lid.
3. Remove the passenger-s air bag module connector clip from the lid.
4. Disconnect the passenger-s SRS module connector.
5. Remove the glove box and the lower passenger-s side instrument panel.
6. Using the Tamper Resistant Torx® Wrench size T50, remove the SRS module-to-instrument panel special bolts and discard them.
7. Remove the 4 SRS module-to-instrument panel mounting nuts.
8. Release the SRS module-to-instrument panel clips and remove the SRS module.

CAUTION Always store the SRS module face up.

1. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
2. Working inside the engine compartment, disconnect the 2 heater hoses from the heater core.
3. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
4. Disconnect both refrigerant lines from the evaporator core. Plug the lines to prevent moisture from entering the system.
5. Remove the glove box and the mating trim.
6. Disconnect the thermal amp connector.
7. emove the air conditioning housing assembly from the vehicle.
8. Remove the instrument panel assembly by performing the following procedure:
   1. Remove the 4 steering column cover screws; then, separate and remove the steering column covers.
   2. Remove the 2 driver-s side lower instrument panel screws and the lower instrument panel.
   3. Remove the 4 cluster cover screws and the cluster cover.
   4. Remove the 6 combination meter screws; then, disconnect the combination meter electrical connector and remove the meter.
   5. Remove the 2 glove box screws and the glove box.
   6. Remove the 2 instrument stay cover screws; then, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the stay cover.
   7. Remove the 2 cluster lid -C- screws; then, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the cluster lid -C-.
   8. Remove the 4 audio and deck pocket screws; then, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the audio and deck pocket.
   9. Disconnect the ASCD main switch connector.
   10. Remove the 2 meter cover screws; then, disconnect the electrical harness connectors and remove the meter cover.
   11. Remove the 4 air conditioning-heater control screws; then, disconnect the control cables and remove the air conditioning-heater control.
   12. Remove the front pillar garnish.
   13. Remove the 3 instrument panel assembly nuts and 2 bolts; then, remove the instrument panel.
       
9. Remove the heater housing assembly.
10. Remove the heater core from the heater housing assembly.

Heater Core REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring Convertible and Breeze

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the radio/HVAC control module bezel. CAUTION

3. Remove the right instrument panel side trim.
4. Remove the two retaining screws at the lower right side support beam.
5. Remove the instrument panel support bolt at the A-pillar.
6. Remove the left instrument panel side trim and upper instrument panel bezel.
7. Remove the lower knee bolster and console screws at the instrument panel.
8. Remove the gearshift knob and shifter bezel.
9. Remove the mounting screws at the front and rear of the floor console. Remove the front and rear console halves.

21. Install the instrument panel support bolt at the A-pillar.
22. Install the two retaining screws at the lower right side support beam.

24. Install the radio/HVAC control module bezel.
25. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
26. Connect the negative battery cable.

Sebring Coupe and Avenger

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. CAUTION
   The vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses air bags. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, air bag modules, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described earlier in this section.
   
2. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle, as outlined in Section 10 of this manual.
3. Drain the cooling system into a suitable container, then disconnect the heater hoses from the dashboard panel. Plug the heater core outlets to prevent coolant from spilling during unit housing removal.
4. Remove the center stay.
5. Remove the lap cooler duct mounting screw. Remove the center duct.
6. Remove the left and right rear heater ducts.
7. Remove the foot distribution duct.
8. If equipped with A/C, remove the cooling unit mounting nut and bolt.
9. Remove the retainer clip, then the heater unit.

    To install:
    
11. Install the heater core into the heater housing.
12. Install the heater housing and retainer clip into the vehicle.
13. If equipped with A/C, install the cooling unit mounting bolt and nut.
14. Install the foot distribution duct. Install the left and right rear heater ducts.
15. Install the center duct, then install the lap cooler duct mounting screw.
16. Install the center stay and connect the heater hoses to the heater core at the dashboard panel.
17. Install the instrument panel.
18. Fill the cooling system to the proper level.
19. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   

CAUTION The vehicles covered by this manual are all equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS, as described in Section 6.

THIS SHOULD READ STEPS 1-60:

1. Disable the air bag system.
   
2. Remove the screws that hold the lower instrument panel console to the floor bracket and instrument panel.
   
3. Move the console rearward from around the instrument panel supports.
   
4. Remove the lower instrument panel console.
   

Remove the lower instrument panel console from the vehicle


Remove the lower heat duct from the instrument panel support


Remove the lower instrument panel supports from the vehicle

1. Remove the screw that secures the lower heat duct to the instrument panel support.
   
2. Remove the heat duct from the vehicle.
   
3. Remove the bolts securing the lower supports to the instrument panel frame and floor.
   

1. Remove the right instrument panel end cover by performing the following;
2. Open the passenger side door.
   
3. Disengage the retaining clips securing the cover to the instrument panel.
   
4. Remove the foam pad covering the A/C inlet projection of the end cover, if equipped.
   

Remove the left instrument panel end cover

1. Remove the left instrument panel end cover by performing the following;
2. Open the driver side door.
   
3. Remove screws holding the parking brake release handle to the instrument panel.
   
4. Remove the screws that hold the bottom of the lower steering column cover to the instrument panel.
   
5. Remove the screw that holds the right side of the lower steering column cover to the instrument panel.
   
6. Disengage the parking brake release cable case from the groove on the end of the parking brake release handle, then disengage the cable end pivot from the slot on the release handle.
   
7. Disengage the retaining clips securing the end cover to the instrument panel.
   

1. Disengage the wiring harness connector from the passenger air bag module.
   
2. Disengage the hidden retaining clips that secure the door sill plate from the door sill. Remove the left and right side door sill plates from the vehicle.
   
3. Disengage the hidden retaining clips that secure the interior cowl trim from the cowl panel. Remove the left and right side interior cowl trim from the vehicle.
   
4. Remove the A-pillar trim covers.
   

Glove box assembly exploded view

2. Remove the glove box.
   
4. Unplug the antenna lead connector from behind the glove box.
   
5. Remove the knee blocker reinforcement panel from under the steering column.
   

Junction block and body control module connectors

2. Unplug the lower two, 40-pin wiring harness connectors from the main junction block near the left side cowl panel.
   
4. Unplug the instrument panel wiring harness connector from the bottom of the body control module.
   
5. Unplug the two, 40-pin wiring harness connectors from the right of the steering column.
   

Remove the clinch bolt joining the upper-to-lower steering column shafts

1. Remove the clinch bolt securing the upper steering column shaft to the lower steering column shaft. Separate the upper and lower shaft.
   
2. Remove the nuts securing the instrument panel frame to the metal brake pedal support on each side of the steering column.
   

1. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, perform the following;
2. Remove the indicator cable loop.
   
3. Remove the clip securing the gear shift cable end to the gear selector adapter.
   
4. Pull the cable end from the gear selector.
   
5. Disconnect the clip for the indicator cable and guide tube from the shift cable bracket and move out of the way.
   
6. Remove the nut securing the gear shift cable bracket to the instrument panel frame.
   
7. Remove the bracket from the instrument panel.
   
8. Remove the screw and bolt holding the hood release handle to the instrument panel, then set the handle out of the way.
   
9. Using a very flat pry tool wrapped in a towel to prevent scuffing or damaging the instrument panel pad, disengage the clips holding the rear edge of the instrument panel top cover. Pull up on the cover enough to unplug the wiring harness connector from the message center.
   
10. Pull the top cover rearward to disengage the hooks that secure the front of the cover to the instrument panel. Remove the instrument panel top cover from the vehicle.
    
11. Unplug the wire connector from the HVAC wiring harness connector behind the glove box area.
    
12. Remove the bolts securing the instrument panel frame to the brackets on the cowl side panels.
    
13. Loosen, but do not remove, the pivot bolts holding the instrument panel to the cowl panels.
    
14. Remove the bolts securing the instrument panel frame to the dash panel below the windshield opening.
    

Remove the instrument panel assembly from the vehicle

1. With the help of an assistant, remove the instrument panel assembly from the vehicle.
   

To install:

1. With the help of an assistant, correctly position the instrument panel assembly into the vehicle.
   
2. Install and tighten the bolts securing the instrument panel frame to the dash panel below the windshield opening.
   
3. Tighten the pivot bolts holding the instrument panel to the cowl panels.
   
4. Install and tighten the bolts securing the instrument panel frame to the brackets on the cowl side panels.
   
5. Plug the wire connector into the HVAC wiring harness connector behind the glove box area.
   
6. Place the instrument panel top cover onto the instrument panel and plug in the wiring harness connector to the message center. Install the top cover being certain to engage all of the hooks and retaining clips.
   
7. Place the hood release handle in position on the instrument panel. Install and tighten the mounting screw and bolt.
   
8. Install the gear shift bracket to the instrument panel.
   
9. If equipped with a mechanical transmission range indicator, install the indicator cable and guide tube. Install the cable retaining clips.
   
10. Install and tighten the nuts securing the instrument panel frame to the metal brake pedal support on each side of the steering column.
    
11. Join the upper steering column shaft to the lower steering column shaft and secure with the clinch bolt.
    
12. Plug in the two, 40-pin wiring harness connectors to the right of the steering column.
    
13. Plug in the instrument panel wiring harness connector to body control module.
    
14. Plug in the lower two, 40-pin wiring harness connectors to the main junction block.
    
15. Install the knee blocker reinforcement panel.
    
16. Plug in the antenna lead connector.
    
17. Install the glove box.
    
18. Install the A-pillar trim covers.
    
19. Install the cowl trim covers door sill plates
    
20. Plug in the wiring harness connector to the passenger air bag module.
    
21. Install the left and right instrument panel end covers.
    
22. Install the lower steering column cover. Be sure to install the parking brake release handle.
    
23. Install the lower supports to the instrument panel frame and floor. Install and tighten the mounting fasteners.
    
24. Install the lower heat duct into the vehicle.
    
25. Install the lower instrument panel console assembly.
    
26. Connect the negative battery cable.
    
27. Test all the instrument on the instrument panel assembly to verify that they operate properly.
