Purchased a 95 940 turbo wagon, ran out of gas then the car shuts off at half a tank and wont start. Half tank everytime... replaced fuel filter and thinking relay...?

I purchased this car about two months ago, car was running great! The fuel guage was not on point, suspecting the sending unit. I ran out of fuel and made it to a gas station and filled it up all the way, it took 14.9 gallons, then drove it around, when it hit half way mark on the guage it died out and would not start, I then removed the pump and fixed (replaced the sending unit) and the guage, im assuming is working fine, cause every time the car reaches half tank it shuts off and i can't start it until i fill it back up. I know im getting around 27 mpg highway i've tested it but it dies then i fill it back up and it takes 9.8 gallons to fill all the way. My understanding is that the 95 940 has a 19 gal tank?

SOURCE: 1994 Volvo 850 wagon dies without warning and then won't start...

Jan,

With all the things you've listed that could be wrong, always start with the most obvious and least expensive....fuel filter would be my first shot..a clogged, or partially clogged fuel filter would allow enugh fuel to pass through it until the demand was to great...in effect..you'd be emptying the filter of all available fuel..then whenhte car sits..fuel would accumulate again.

Good guesses on the other parts though...you should grab a wrench and go at it...sound slike you know what yu're doing.

SOURCE: 1991 volvo turns over but wont start

If your air mass meter tests good, the I would tell you to check the HIGH PRESSURE PUMP underneath the Driver's side chassis pump holder-next to the fuel filter.

There are 2 pumps on your Volvo---the in-tank low pressure, and the chassis mounted high pressure. The car will run with the in-tank failed and the high pressure good. It will not run with the high pressure failed. Test the pump by applying voltage to the two terminals.

Another common failure, should the high pressure pump be good, is the HALL EFFECT SENSOR located in the distributor on the back of the engine. Once this sensor goes, it's no start. A rebuilt or used distributor may be the answer to your problem.

SOURCE: 1986 Volvo 240 starts but will die when I increase the RPMs

My 88 240 has a bad connection where the fuel pump relay plugs in , when the relay gets jostled the car dies. If I jam all the wires back into the plastic fitting it runs fine for a while.

Car ran fine shut it off came back it didn't want to start. started went about half a mile sputered an died wouldn't start back up 1991 subaru loyal wagon

Hi sounds like the typical fuel pump or filter problem with these cars, best way to tell is take top fuel hose off on fuel filter under hood, turn key on ignition (not start) and fuel should pump out, if not its your pump, just beware of doing when engine is hot

I have fuel in gas tank-after shutting off will not start unless I put gas into fuel tank. Is it a fuel filter issue. or?

Just a question. Do you run your car on empty. If so that could be your problem with an empty tank you are sucking all the dirt through the filter and making it plug up. It is better to keep your tank above half full and does not cost any more than to run on empty. All mechanics will tell you to always keep your tank above half full.

hi it can really only be two things, first is the fuel sender on the pump inside the tank it could be stuffed or sticking causing a false reading, second it can also be a faulty fuel gauge on the dash.

Ran car totally out of gas and now it won't start. We have put about a half tank of gas in it and also fuel injector cleaner. We have put ether in it also and it started for a minute but won't stay...

When the fuel tank runs very low it picks up sediment from the bottom of your tank, you might have clogged the fuel filter or the strainer mounted on the fuel pump. your local mechanic is the first person to call and check on a fuel system inspection and cleaning, you can change the filter if you feel comfortable with it, strainer will require the tank to drop, and pump assembly to be removed. look closely to the filter clips before trying to remove it, the break almost everytime and can be bought at a dealership or part store. Special tools will be needed!

1990 Jeep grand Wagoneer i ran out of gas, when i put gas in in the jeep the truck try to start but start draging then just did nothing,i try to jump it and steel nothing but just a clicking sound

by running out any debris in your tank will get sucked into your fuel pump. REplacing the fuel pump usually means removing the tank. You can try replacing the fuel filter first its much easier and cheaper. The filter is attached to your fuel line between the tank and the engine, usually in the frame. TAkes about 15 minutes to replace.
